What's Your Best Email Title (here's mine)

One of the things I am trying to work on in 2012 is my open rate for emails. I have never been very good at writing great titles. Anyone willing to share? Not trying to steal blindly - just to get the ideas flowing.

So far - this is my best title - gets opened apx 4% of the time.

I realize there are many variables including list quality, etc. Just trying to get some ideas. Feel free to let me know your opinion of mine as well.

Thanks

Test your subject lines. Run split tests on even subtle changes to them. If you need a little inspiration and or guidance, check out Mark Brownlows excellent resource on subject line writing here.

Good writers know how to think like good readers. Put yourself in your reader's position and ask what would make you open that email.

Here's mine that works like gangbuster all the time:

"This is why I don't do __________ (insert whatever it is), FNAME!"

Always gets one of the highest open rates.
Now, people- have fun with this

Yes - one of those variables would be your niche. If I were to send an email out with that subject, I would get a ton of complaints But I can understand how it might do well in a different niche.

As you asked, all of my best subjects say something about the content of the mail, but do not give away what is inside. They need to open the mail to find out. An example is one I used yesterday:

Take your pick, but take it now ...

Inside there was a choice of two discounted offers

    Cheers,

    Will

Hey Joe, if you have a product of your own you can try starting your email with "UPDATE! ........" ... this gets me a very nice open rate.

I don't recommend you use these, but you asked...

        1: THUD!
2: What the HELL do you want?

Yes, I used both. The first was opened and commented on heavily, because the subject seemed to promise one of my then-famous rants. Instead, it was an article that several prominent folks in the business told me should have been turned into an expensive product. (I thought it was pretty good myself.)

        The second for obvious reasons.

The funny thing about the second one is that another person tried to do the same thing with an email to his list, and it blew up in his face. Lesson: Some things have to be approached with a certain care to the end result.

And some emails should have disclaimers like, "Professional stunt writer. Don't try this at home."

Writing an email that will get opened depends a lot on your list. I work in copywriting giving hints and tips to my list and most of the time I actually just start it with Copywriting. They know it's from me and I don't sell them gimmicks so most of them open it. My average is between 80-90 percent.
