Best UK Based Hosting Service

I'd like to know which is the best UK based hosting service. I have an account with Hostgator. Would like a separate account to target traffic from the UK and Europe. Have been recommended 1&1. Been checking reviews, some of the sites carry pretty negative ones.

Will probably get the new account in the first week of March so have lots of time to make up my mind

    Different people have different needs/requirements/methods of evaluation: I'm not sure there is one "best UK-based hosting service".

    Wanting UK hosting for a .co.uk domain of my own, to target exclusively UK traffic, I did a lot of research into this (I mean really a lot!) because I'm not someone who can afford "accidents", being technophobic and incompetent myself, and needing to "outsource" anything that goes wrong on me.

    The one I came up with was Reseller Hosting, Web Hosting, VPS & Dedicated Servers | Heart Internet and I've been using it happily ever since. Nothing's ever gone wrong, but their customer service is very impressive anyway. I like them and happily recommend them. (They won't be the cheapest, I'm pretty sure, but hosting's so cheap anyway that this doesn't really matter to many people?).

    From my own research/findings/fears/second-hand information, 1&1 is "one of the ones" I absolutely wouldn't touch with a barge-pole, but that's purely my impression and doubtless others may disagree.

    alexa is right. heart is where it's at. i've had a reseller account with them for 3 years and it's been great - 99% uptime and great support service.

    Avoid 1&1 at all costs. Really horrible company. Just google 1&1 to see the problems.

    Thanx a lot for your replies. I did take a look at Heart Internet website last month. Hosting is certainly a minor expense compared to other stuff. However, I am not in a position to pay for dedicated servers. Would like something comparable to the Baby Package on Hostgator - which allows 999 websites for $ 120 per year. I'd be setting up a few dozen mini-sites. Looks like Heart allows a maximum of just 3 sites per shared account and TSO 6. Will certainly mail them. I guess UK hosting will prove to be a bit expensive than the Hostgator one.

    BTW I mailed 1&1 regarding some queries I had and they suggested I call them during office hours. Not a very good sign.

    I use BetterWebSpace - Domain names and Hosting Services I've been with them since I started. I also use Hostgator. The BWS UK servers' speed is much superior to HG.
