Well...

The title really says it all folks lol

I downloaded a good one called "Riva FLV" off download.com. It's easy to use and works great...BUT it will only allow me a maximum screen res of 800x600 so that leaves my video with poor quality.

Any suggestions Warriors

P.S. It's a screen capture video if that matters at all...

Thanks to all in advance!!

I have a free copy of "Any FLV Player" and it comes with a converter. The drawback to the free version is it limits you to only converting 3 minutes of video. I think a full license is $79.

Once I have some decent money coming in I am going to upgrade to a full license.

The best in my experience is pretty expensive but you know what they say, go to on2.com

I have tried a number of the others and found the flexibility of on2 allowed me more options plus the conversions went significantly faster.

    I hope that helps.

John hit it on the head you guys.

Here is what you need to know:

    1. No free flv video converter will give you the best results... EVER.

    Why?

Simple... the best flv codec on the earth at this time is owned by On2.com

The license to use that codec ranges from $50k to $100k up front plus $20+ per unit distributed.

    2. The best free flv codec is ffmpeg. This is what Riva and many other free and even paid encoding solutions use... but compared to On2 vp6 its like a nice freshly cooked dinner compared to one that has already been chewed and spit in the ground.

    3.

I downloaded a good one called "Riva FLV" off download.com. It's easy to use and works great...BUT it will only allow me a maximum screen res of 800x600 so that leaves my video with poor quality.
The dimensions of your video has little to do with the quality of your video.

First off... if you are referring to screen capture... stop capturing the entire screen. Best results come from 1:1 capture vs encoding dimensions ratio.

Second the only things that effect image quality are the codec you use and the bit rate you encode at.

If you use free codecs to get acceptable quality you must use higher bit rate settings. Its as simple as that.

The problem with that is you then have a high bit rate which introduceds all sorts of problems with video size being bigger, people on slower connections not having a great experience watching it etc.

    So what's the answer?

Dump the "free" encoders and always use On2 vp6 like John suggested.

Flix Standard from on2 is only $39 and the quality results you can get at lower bit rates than with the free junk will astound you.

There is not cheaper or better alternative in that price range.

So if you like better image quality and smaller file size then that is your solution.

FFmpeg is pretty free without any nags/watermarks/file length restriction crap.

IF you grab winff, it's got ffmpeg built in & it's pretty simple to run..

But you do get crappy looking video.

The person who posted this started this thread because they were using an encoder that uses ffmpeg (riva encoder).

They did not like the quality so they were looking for an alternative to ffpmpeg which is a poor quality flv compression codec.

So in other words they posted saying "I don't like the quality ffmpeg is giving me" and you posted replying "try ffmpeg" ;-)

Thank you VERY much for your post and insight! I can always count on you when it comes to video...something that I'm totally new to.

I'm actually buying a copy of flix standard as we speak.

P.S. A little bit off subject but does anyone know if there are any flash players that I use on my site that I can set to play automatically as soon as a visitors hits whatever page I have it on?

    Thank ya!

Any video converter.com is my pick of the bunch as you can choose the quality and resolution. If you don't want elaborate options it simplifies the process as well so all you have to do is choose the output format required. A free software - always a plus!
