Member Moderation - A Little Restraint?

I just watched a thread get reported and zapped - and don't really understand why. A new member posted a thread and, yes, he had a signature....

-but he didn't tell people to go to his signature
-it was his site - three lines in signature were three pages on his domain

He was almost instantly called out - and then others jumped in and some of those were new members themselves. The post was not earth shaking nor was it offensive.

Member moderation is good but I hope we can keep it in "moderation". Before reporting someone for an affiliate link - make sure it IS an affiliate link (this wasn't). And please - before posting "you'll be banned", think again - that's not something members decide nor should it be used as a threat.

Just because someone is a new member doesn't mean they aren't trying to contribute here. And before you "chime in" to join a bashing look for yourself to see if there is a violation of the rules....or not. If you aren't sure, do nothing. There are newbies here who will spam and should be reported. There are also new members who are trying to find a way to contribute.

Let's give them a chance!

Rant over. Picking up soapbox and exiting (quickly) stage left.

Thanks for correcting me on that one. I didn't see the previous ones. It was one of several threads I'd seen in the past day or two. The one you mention seemed OK to me so I probably the saw corrected version - but maybe he was trying to improve?

Just hate to see us get so judgmental that we attack without giving some explanation or chance for the new member to get with the program. In this case, sounds like you had already done that.

          Ken -

I had to look up "defenestrator" - you make up your own words, too?
Or do you just throw things and people out the window

I've been threatened by the best - a while back got 4 infractions in 7 minutes from one person. Bless his little heart, he's no longer with us. Once he found the infraction button he was a madman.

If I think someone new is just misinformed, I usually use PM rather than infractions as infractions seem to bring on a defensive reaction in many people. Adding an explanation is a great idea.

Hey Kay, I like your spirit about moderation, and giving the new people a chance.

I'm not sure I fully agree here though:
If I think someone new is just misinformed, I usually use PM rather than infractions as infractions seem to bring on a defensive reaction in many people. Adding an explanation is a great idea.
Not that I give out a lot of infractions because I don't. I've given very few out, but I've had just the opposite reactions. In almost every circumstance where I gave an infraction, the person PMed me to ask why, and how can they keep from getting more of them.

I'm one that will write out a short explanation when I give one, and in a nice way. Perhaps that's why.

Kay, your post is out of line, and I'm tired of it!

    Retrain?

I damn well don't need to be retrained to moderate around this place. Maybe you need retraining. Maybe your family needs retraining. Maybe your pets and neighbors need retraining, but I don't. Go retrain yourself!

And while you're at it, step down off that high horse too and stop giving advice. It's obvious to me that you don't have a damn clue about what you're talking about.

Man, this kind of post really pisses me off.

I also feel that education is a better way of dealing with those who may not be familiar with the rules, I tend to advise rather than jump on. Unless the jumpee really deserves it.

To be honest, from the responses, I can't tell if all my posts above were taken with the humor they were written. Sometimes it's hard to hear humor in the writing, even with the smileys. So here are 10 more just to be sure...

Hmm ... no I don't wonder. Perhaps it's because a lot of the reason stems from people not being able to self promote in threads or use affiliate links in their sig files. So they figure why waste their time if they can't sell themselves or their products in the manner they want to.

          No Tom,

They aren't okay. I didn't mentioned them is all, and don't read something into my post that isn't there. Just because I give an entire list doesn't mean squat.

          Tina,

No, Thomas, those guys usually end up with disappearing posts as well.

No system is perfect but it's better than the forum turning into a giant waste dump for spammers, isn't it?

Well said, and right on the money!

Lol about the rules comment too. That's a fact! I people would take 3 minutes to read the rules of this forum, there would be less hard feelings, less whinning, and more quality post/threads.

You know, people wouldn't need the restraints if they would remember to take their medication.

Also, what kind of cuisine will the restaurant be serving up? I am partial to Italian.

    Hi
I am a newbie and I have been trying to make a contribution here while sucking up as much information as I can from the people more knowledgeable than my self. However whilst I may not be an internet, website or seo guru I could be considered as an authority in general sales and marketing and I offer that in return for what I can gain here.
Having said that I have been here a few weeks made some posts and sent some pms BUT at this time I am not fully aware of all the rules so I guess I would be a target for an infraction should someone else be having a bad day.
There is a lot of learning here by reading the posts and I find it really helpfull when people respond to a post and tell the OP that they are posting incorrectly.
Little messages like "Hey ***** i think you will find that this type of post is not allowed here" and then state the reason or the rule
This way every one can learn from it.
I would imagine (in some cases ) that a genuine newbie ( not a serial spammer or scammer ) would be bewildered by receiving an infraction so early in their time here on Warrior
I am here to learn and I appreciate that the majority of subscribers here are here to help others and help them selves.
Whilst Serial Spammers and Scammers are a total pain and shoild be hung drawn and quartered perhaps we should remember we were all New at something at an earlier time.

      Hey Grumpy,

Then you should fit in very nicely here. Sounds like an even trade off.

I agree with you, there is a lot of learning to do here, but some of the newer people don't seem to read the rules up in the sticky. There aren't that many of them, and they outline what is pretty much acceptable in this community. If they would take their time and read them first, they should fit in here very nicely too.

Yup, Some of us do point out that their posts aren't acceptable, and then show them how to amend them.

Anyway, I would say that Warriors can be hard to deal with sometimes too, but they aren't as hard as they once were, so we've grown right along side of the newbies in some ways.

    Im a newbie!

As a was running around trying to learn. I got into my head as I am sure most of you will promote in any training sites you provide.

Use your signature to sell/promote your products.

When I found the warrior forum. It was fairly plain to me that signatures are controlled as indicated in the rules. However as we are all from differing cultures we understand/take slighty different meanings/things from english.

The net result was I had affiliate links in my sig, got attacked, then they where removed for me. Hence the new sig declaring the link as My Site !

You see as far as I was concerned I was advertising my products. By all accounts to a newbie all of you seem to be advertising your products. If you see what I mean.

The infactions are a terrible device or should I say should be named to warning or TOS reminder. Which would make a whole lot more sense IMO.

The default email template should have an opening paragraph with an explaination of why the user has recieved it.

There are a number of selections the moderator can select that could cause a default paragraph to be ammended to the infaction emails.

Just some thoughts into the air.

    cheers,

    Robert

Oh my dear.... I thought I read 'eggplant sperm' - must get a wee thingy to keep my reading glasses close at hand! (Or hanging just below my face for when I have senior moments like this!)

Now, what was this post about - oh yes - moderating...

It's a hard call to make sometimes - you see new members doing things that they shouldn't and you see old members doing things that they shouldn't - it's so much easier to look the other way on both counts. I don't know about you, but I come to the forum to learn and to exchange thoughts, opinions and ideas - not moderate threads. However, when I see a junk post made for the sole purpose of boosting thread counts, or threads posted in the wrong forum despite several requests by Paul for members to PLEASE POST IN THE RIGHT FORUM - whaddadyou do?

If these kinds of posts are not reported, we all lose. And if they are reported, people learn pretty quickly not to do what they just did, myself included. (In my weaker moments, I often succumb to the mischief elf who sits on my left shoulder - he gets me into all kinds of trouble - especially when he prompts me to post something 'iffy' here on the WF.) I need some elf mace. Is anyone offering a WSO on how to resist elfish urges?
