Very new, some questions about... everything.

I am a new member to the site, and I am new at basically everything involved with internet marketing and the like. I have started a new website in a very overpopulated niche because it is what I love, and I will be attempting to learn how to actually *get* traffic to my site without spending a lot of cash. I am a broke college student. We do not have a lot of disposable income.

Anyway, my site is: everythinggeek.org

If I am not allowed to post that for any reason just delete the post, I will make a new one later without it.

It is a brand new site, and I was wondering if anyone has any idea on how to improve it and make it more marketable? (Other then the admittedly shoddy editing quality, that will be improved soonish)

Secondly, for a person with basically zero funds, is there any way for my to learn the tactics involved with organic searches? This may be a pipe dream because of the over saturation, but it would be nice to maybe get some traffic that way. If not that, are there any other methods I should look into?

And finally, am I allowed to put my website into my signature? Or would that frowned upon since all of you know why I am doing it?

Anyway, I look forward to your responses, thanks for giving me your time of day

Feel free to add me on Skype and I can help you a little more but I'll give you a few tidbits here.

Yes, you can post a link in your sig. It is frowned upon in posts unless you are looking for feedback. If people think you don't really need feedback and are just trying to get traffic, you can get in trouble though.

You can do a lot of basic SEO 100% for free. There are tons of ways to do it. Guest blogging, article syndication, blog comments, forum posting, social bookmarking, working on your on-page SEO, and much more.

One big thing you need to do is find a way to get people onto an email list of possible. This will help you out later because you will be able to get in contact with visitors and keep them coming back to your site.

Scott: I assume you meant a private message? If so I did not receive one. I will send you one in a moment just in case.

Amanda: Thanks for the response! Unfortunately I do not have skype capability right now, internet is far too.... touchy. I am upgrading my line from the pitiful 1mbs to 20mbs next week though. Very excited. I understand most of the stuff you mentioned, but not guest blogging or social bookmarking. I assume that the guest blogging is actually creating blog posts for bloggers with an established following? If that is so, how do you go about advertising that? No idea what social bookmarking is.

I can not put links in the body of my post anyway, as I am far too new, but if anyone wants to give me feedback on my site I would appreciate it. (everythinggeek.org) Once again, the editing quality is awful, I would mostly just like ways that I can improve its usability, or for someone to point out any obvious mistakes I might have made.

Well, free to add me when you upgrade. I only really use text chat on it but I'm always on there if I'm not busy.

Guest blogging is where you write a blog post for someone's blog with a link back to your blog. This can work really well, especially if you find a high traffic blog that accepts guest blog posts.

Social bookmarking sites are sites like Digg, Reddit, and StumbleUpon.

  • Hi Caelinus

You've got yourself a great domain name, and a nice cleanly designed site. The first thing I'd say is get some more content on there. Start with the easy stuff like this and see where you land in the the organic rankings, then at least you can properly measure the impact of your SEO efforts.

With a site like this, once you've got some interesting content I'd start mentioning it on related blogs / forums etc. There is a lot of related community content on the web, you need to get mentions in those places. Then if the site takes off and people like it, it should start to market itself.

I don't think you're going to be able to make a dent in the organic rankings by just trying to push this site up yourself - you need to get the kind of content that people want to talk about and hope your visitors then do your SEO for you.

    Good luck

    James

With a site like this, social bookmarking is going to be your best friend. Look into SocialAdr. It is my personal favorite for social bookmarking because rather than you bookmarking all of your own blog posts, other people are bookmarking them.

Wow, sorry for the slow reply I guess, I got answers to a couple of my questions while I was typing. Thanks for the help!

And yes, I am in the process of creating new content, most of the stuff I have up now is there because I needed something to play with when I was formatting (hence the unedited state) most of the other articles I have are saved on my computer.

I created a twitter account for this, have any of you had any success through twitter marketing? (@geekjosiah... @everythingeek was already taken, for an "under construction" webiste, the jerk ) And if so, is it best to just follow and then respond? Or are there other ways to use it?

And sorry for the bust of questions. I have an inquisitive mind and a semi obsessive nature. I love information.
