Kindle Publishing for others?

Hi folks,

I need to ask your advice again. Several people have asked me to handle the publishing of their books into Kindle format.

Some of them want me to handle the entire process including preparation, uploading and marketing. In this case would it be better for me to load them into my Amazon account or theirs?

The reason for the question is that if I am doing the marketing, it would be easier to manage from my account so that I do not have to log into their account, but how would you then market different authors using the same account.

I would be grateful for any advice.

Thanks
Di

Di, I think this is (kind of) a variation of the question about article writers being asked by clients to submit their articles to EZA for them, and related matters?

There isn't necessarily a "right answer" to it, if so.

It isn't in the client's interest to have their product in someone else's account. In principle. They shouldn't want that. But some do, I know.

I think all you can do is explain to them that their choice is really one between (a) having their product in someone else's account, and (b) giving someone else access to their account, and let them decide.

Check around on the amazon site - I am sure that there is a way to be a publisher who handles several different authors.

Di - if you run everything through your own account, you could run into serious difficulties with tax issues. A good friend of mine agreed to help a friend of hers by allowing her to use her Ebay and its associated PayPal account to sell some items.

Yesterday, she received a 1099 (US tax form) from PayPal which grossly bloated her perceived income because of the items her friend had sold though that account.

I cannot begin to imagine the hassle she is now going to face with the IRS trying to explain the figures.

EDIT: I wasn't suggesting the IRS could directly influence your tax situation in South Africa BUT... for your own tax purposes, you could encounter problems explaining earnings which will not be yours in your Amazon receipts.

I'm not sure the IRS gets to South Africa but if the SA government taxes online income, then Annie is right. You could run into a serious problem. However, if that is not an issue, I think you should go with Alexa and let your clients know what their options are then work with their choices. If you have to work on multiple accounts use the stealth/incognito function of your browser for easy management. But it can get clumsy so make sure you CHARGE those clients for using your time like that.

Why dont you have 2 different packages for your clients? One where you 'host' their books and the other where you upload into their account.

Just make sure your always profitabke becuase you are providing one incredible opportunity and servcie by doing this for other people. Good luck and please let us know how things go with your Kindle adventure.

P.S The challenge you face right now is a good one too have!

      Diana,

I suggest you ask this question on the Self-publishing Yahoo list, whose members include a lot of small publishers and book marketers. They'll have real-life experience of the pros and cons of the two options.

You can sign up at Self-Publishing : Publishing discussions and answers.

Thanks for the input. I appreciate it.

Two of them I am doing as a favour so that I can learn and streamline the process. They will be hosting their own books and I will not be responsible for the marketing.

The other two want me to do everything. We are splitting the revenue on a percentage basis. I know and trust them both, so payment will not be a problem which ever route I take.

We most definitely have tax issues in South Africa . One way of overcoming that if I use my account is that they provide me with an invoice for their portion, so it becomes a tax deductible expense in my business. If we go with their accounts, I will just provide them with an invoice to eliminate the tax problem on their side.

Rich - I know. GREAT problem to have Another unexpected revenue stream that I never thought of when I first started in July here on the forum.

Marcia - thank you. Going to check out that site now.

P.S. I just had to add something here. This whole process of getting books ready for Kindle was totally simplified for me by Paul Coleman's Kindle Revolutions. This made all the difference.
