when i thought id give website creation/marketing a try at christmas(2011) yes im that new i have a host gator account and about 4 other websites also hosted by them.
Now im wondering does it matter that they are all sub domains or not is it only the public section of the html that matter as to me it looks like all the sites are linked to the main domain name?

It's hard to understand your question, but if you're asking if you should link to other sites than your primary domain....answer would be definitely yes.

I don't think sub domain names work unless its a squeeze page or site that you are driving traffic to via traffic source. If you expect organic traffic to a sub domain name, that's difficult.

Actually its not difficult at all. I get plenty of organic traffic on many sub-domains. The search engines see them as individual and separate sites.

I get plenty of traffic and search rankings for sub-domain names and I have probably about 500 sub-domain names. Sub-domain names are seen as a different site although they are on the main domain.

Sub-domain names have many advantages and can be very powerful.

I think the poster is refering to the unlimited addon domains wth shared hosting and how HostGator makes all you new domains a subdomain of your main domain which you chooose when you register the account. For example say your main domain is domain1.com. domain2.com and domain3.com can be accessed directly but are listed as subdomains of your main domian as domain2.domain1.com and domain3.domain1.com.

I'm no expert on this but I don't think it affects your search engine rankings or anything similar. You will find strange indexing results sometmies though.
