Aaaaaaaaah

I kept putting off my back up, was going to do it this weekend and guess what ... my Dell has died.

Think with a restore it will be okay but the moral of the story is ..............

DO YOUR BACK UPS

Same thing happened mine a few months ago. I hadn't a clue what to do but Dell support were very good. I managed to restore my files and a Dell guy came out within about 2 days to replace my hard drive (even though my warranty had run out a few weeks previously).

I have a system that does automatic backups to an external hd at night. This way as long as I keep my computer on I am covered. There are a lot of programs that can do that for you.

Same thing just happened to me. The sad thing is - I had bought Acronis to do automatic backups - but did not understand how to make it work. The guys at the computer store are going to show me how to set it up so I don't have to worry so much should this happen again. Mine was a Dell too!

That's exactly why I don't buy a dell. Seriously, if you got some time, just learn to build your own PC. You will not only be able to build a more powerful machine for much cheaper (Almost 50% cheaper), but you will also be able to fix all your problems!

For those that want a simple backup strategy:

    1) Buy a USB external drive ($60 for a 250GB or so...)
    2) Download Microsoft Synctoy 2.0 (free)
    3) Make sure everything is stored in your My Documents folder and back it up!

    Easy!

Yep, things like that can happen anytime.

Backup your important files at regular intervals.

I pay Mozy to backup my stuff to their servers. I think I paid $99 for 2 years.

I don't trust any local hardrive unless it has RAID 1 and offline tape backups. Eventually, all drives will fail within 5-7 years (maybe sooner).

Ironically enough, I'm in the process of restoring my 113gb D: drive which died earlier this week. I would have lost many HD family movies if it wasn't for Mozy.

Carbonite is good as well, btw.

I tried going with MAC but 10 years of windows has my brain stuck...

I bought the missing manual and had a system built by a Professional Video/Studio Developer in Hollywood CA..paid $3500 with $6,000 in software and my wife uses it for email and she does not even know how to find google..

If any warrior wants a good MAC, go to My Stuff Online and click the link for Computers to see what it has...

Let me know if you are interested...

Wish I could break this windows drug habit ...MAC images are incredible compared to windows...

Same. Makes me feel like I'm using a toy whenever I'm on one, I can't get ahold of it unfortunately.

Yeah, I hear you on that, John. I've had a couple of crashes since I started in IM. This is a very important post.

Word to the wise. Do not do a reformat or back up when you're sleepy. I made this mistake 1.5 years ago. Backed up everything on a 500GB External HD, and 5 minutes later BAM! Reformatted the external HD and my computer's HD. That hurt so bad, I can still feel it.

Now I'm obsessed with backing up on multiple sources, online, external HD's, flash drives, etc.... It is a little insane, but I don't want to feel that pain again

Agreed that it is always much cheaper and more efficient to build your own. I've found that Tiger Direct always has great prices on 'bare bones' kits that are a breeze to put together. Just did one for my stepdaughter and I've built 4 or 5 others from their stock in the last few years.

On the other hand, my main machine is a 4 year old Dell that has never even burped, although it's carried a heavy workload for all that time.
