What Do You Want in a VPA?

Obviously different people are going to have different needs and expectations when they are looking to hire a VPA but there is certainly some common ground there as well.

When you are hiring a basic VPA, what types of skills are you looking for?

Basic meaning, relatively low-level, entry type for a lower price ... these are probably not going to be the VPA that sets up your online empire and custom codes personalized extensions and plug-ins for your WordPress and other CMS installations.

    It really depends on what you're needing an assistant for.
    With that being said, IMHO, the best bet is to find someone that's reliable. To me, this is the most important quality as you're trying to build a long term relationship here... So, if the person is reliable, that you can trust her/him, you can still teach her/him how to do things she/he can't yet. It might take you a little time at first (compared to someone who would be fully operational from day one), explaining exactly what you need... but soon you'll find her/him doing everything exactly as you asked.

    I think trust is the most important thing. VPAs NEED to be honest if you are going to work with them in the long run, or else you're not going to get your moneys worth and the whole point of hiring someone will go to waste

    Another thing that is important is that they must be good communicators. I've seen some people who spend a lot of time training their VPAs and then they just disappear for long periods of time. VPAs should communicate regularly, and constantly update their employers on their progress etc. They should be fluent in the language the employer speaks too.
