Problem with Domain from Namecheap to Hostgator

Hello,

i have a registered Domain at Namecheap and the Hosting at Hostgator. I connected it to Hostgator by
"Manage Domains->Select Your Domain->Transfer DNS To Webhost"

So now the Domain without "www" goes to Hostgator. But if i type the Domain name with "www" it's still at Namecheap

Whats the problem?

Greetings
Marc

Hey Marc,How long ago did you do this? Sometimes it can take up to 24 hours for nameservers to update.

It's one of two things, I think.

Either you need to wait a little longer, or (perhaps more likely?) in your "manage domains" screen at Namecheap, the "@" version (non-www version) isn't redirected to the www-version, as it should be. You should probably change that, if so (and if so, it will still take a little while for that to become effective).

The "@" version and the www-version are two separate url's (one is in fact a subdomain of the other) and if you want to use the www-version (for your site, and your backlinks, and whatever) you need that to be redirected to Hostgator and the "@" (non-www) one to be redirected to the www-version, so that both will then resolve to your Hostgator hosting.

Thank you very much for your useful reply. I was also facing the same problem and now it is working perfectly.

Log in to your account, and click on "Domains" (top left) and then on the little menu that opens, click on "manage domains" (top right of menu, underneath the words "My Account").

You now see a screen headed "Your domains", which has a list of your domains in blue, as active links. Click on the name of the domain concerned.

That opens a new screen, headed "Modify domain - nameofdomain.com".

On the left-hand menu, lower down, click on "All Host Records".

The right-hand side of the screen now changes, and the top two lines (under "Host Name") show "www" and "@". In the box headed "IP Address/URL" to the right of the "@" one, type in "http://www.nameofdomain.com" (substitute the name of your domain where I've put the word "nameofdomain"); then select "URL redirect" from the little drop-down menu just to the right of where you've typed that in; then scroll down to the bottom and click "save changes".

("@", in this context, just means "the non-www one").

That should do it, I think.

If not, Namecheap has really friendly "live chat" support staff who may do it for you, if you just ask them. (The problem with doing it that way, though, is that you don't learn how to do it yourself.)

              Curious.

How did you successfully redirect the non-www-version of this domain to Hostgator, in the first place, then?

                Thank you very much.

Ah ... yes, I see! A domain you've transferred there rather than buying it there ... it starts to make sense. Good luck.

Marc just check My Account > Manage Domains > Modify Domain in your Namecheap control panel and make sure you have set your hostgator nameservers up correctly.

Also make sure you have added the domain correctly to your hosting account.

I had the exact same issue and contacted Namecheap support. I was very pleased with the quick response they provided via chat, made me pleased I chose a highly recommended domain registrar!

The guy said I need to change my name servers to Hostgator and then from the cPanel in Hostgator to do the redirect.

It took a few hours for the namer server update to go through. Then I did a quick search for how to do the update in cPanel, since its my first time doing this.

I found this page which gave great instructions, I followed that and it works brilliantly!

I too purchased my domain name from Namecheap and purchased shared hosting via hostgator, so this scenario was perfect for me.

Thank you @mnov5534 for not only a useful link, but a great and understandable example. It worked for me.

Too often people say do this and do that, without providing enough information for a newbie to understand what they are doing. That link to "How to Use Hostgator Domain Redirect Feature from cPanel" worked perfectly for resolving references that do not include the www (ie. domain-name dot com) for me.

@Alexa Your example for at-sign non-www entries at Namecheap was excellent also, when I get ready to resolve wild card sub-domains (ie. sub-domain. domain-name dot com ) I will revisit it. I might have Sys Admin experience but its been a few years since I set up routes on a Unix/Linux servers, so will need to refresh. My guess is I will have to call hostgator support and let them add this for me, but will attempt it with Namecheap first just to see.
