Hi folks

As I write for a living (I'm an editor of a business to business engineering publication) I'd like to explore the potential avenues that could be available to someone like me regarding starting up an online writing service.

Problem is, I'm a bit unsure how to go about this. I'm very accustomed to researching subject material and producing quite lengthy well-written articles, but is this the way to go?

I guess what I'm thinking of is a kind of online freelance service where I would write articles to order. I don't consider myself an expert by any means but the fact that I generate original articles for a living must give me a kind of a head start in this.

Is the best first step to develop my own site and post a number of articles there? Much of what I've read (from people like Alexa Smith) suggest that it's best to have articles listed on my own website first and then offer them out to article directories with backlinks back to my site?

I think I'm getting a bit confused how I can make money from writing as you have probably established by now! I am a half decent writer and sincerely believe that it's a skill that I could use from a business perspective. Problem is, I just don't know how!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

That's advice to people using their articles as a way to promote products for sale (as affiliates or as vendors), not for people planning to derive their income by selling articles.

Indeed. See if any of this stuff helps?

First, if you read through the following recent threads, you'll find many helpful observations and suggestions.

Secondly, if you want to think a little more about "the markets in which ones chooses to compete, as a writer", you might find some of these resources helpful/interesting (and most of the recommendations in them for "further reading" will also be pretty reliable ones, I think), and very relevant both to your express question of "how much people will pay" and to your implicit one of "how to find people who will pay more" ...

Thanks Alexa. Ignoring the freelance article writing bit for a moment, what ways are there for article writers/marketers to actually make money? What's the revenue generating process?

Given your experience and what you're looking to do, I highly recommend you check out Ghostwrting Cash (no affiliate link) by Tiffany Dow. She is an internet marketer and former "ghostwriter to the gurus" and a fellow "Warrior" with a background in journalism. Her stuff is right up your alley. Once you get that up and running and satisfy your immediate need for money, you could also open a PLR store.

A PLR or Private Label Rights store is one in which you sell pre-produced content, usually written, based on what people are looking for in the search engines. It's another way to provide content for people who don't want to write. It's cheaper than ghostwriting, but is a good way to generate residual income like other kinds of internet marketers. Like with Ghostwriting, you get paid via Paypal.

Tiffany also has a product called PLR ATM (no affiliate link) where she teaches you how to make money with a PLR store. With your writing skills, you could make a killing. You might also want to check out her blog.

    Good luck,
    Joey
