You're right - by far the best choice.

Blogspot, in particular, is a good one to avoid, if you're planning to use a free blog-host. So many Warriors have lost their sites there.

Yea if you can swing it, I'd go for the hosting and domain. I've found when it comes to SEO these definitely rank a lot quicker (if that's what your aim is of course).

Like everyone else said, getting your own Domain Name is the best option. You might want to go for Free Web Hosting when you just start. But eventually you are going to end up having your own hosting. So that depends on your budget.

By the way, when you're just starting out, Shared Hosting will be your best option while selecting a hosting plan.

What do you think about .tk domain with a free ad-free web hosting, like Byethost? Would that be a good choice for a beginner? I know that .tk doesn't sound as professional as .com, .net or .org but it's free.

I think I'd have some money to invest in domain and hosting but I wonder if this isn't really my kind of business, so it would be so much easier to start with this free method (.tk and free hosting).

I second hostgator - they are my third hosting provider now after two others that caused a lot of headache.

Yet to have any issues with gator at all.

This was my plan first. Setting up a free blog/.tk website with free hosting to get started and learn about this (and make money of course).

  Free hosting sites are not reliable. Their owners make money off you in some other way - either by spamming you with affiliate offers, or having advertising on your site. If they don't make enough money to cover their own hosting fees, they get shut down - taking your site with them.
  
  GoDaddy have coupon code offers from time to time whereby you can get your first year registration very cheaply indeed. I recently registered a domain for $1.
  
  If you don't have a lot of money to spend on hosting, have a look on eBay. You can find some very good deals there; just make sure they're a real hosting company and not a reseller.

I'm also going to vote for hosting + domain. It's not that huge of an investment, but in the long term it's going to be "cheaper" then a free hosted blog.
Like other people say: a free hosted blog sometimes gets deleted all out of the sudden, because you broke one tiny rule. If you really have a tiny budget - wait for some coupon for a domain and hosting - could save you like 50% (on hosting) or even 80% (on domains).

I can recommend HostGator for your hosting. Their customer service is outstanding and the quality of the hosting is awesome too.

Is the service any good though? I considered using them in the past and got a lot of replies saying they had issues.

I didn't see anything negative on my Google search.

I have shared hosting at Byethost (2 accounts) and Hostgator (1 account) and i can't see any difference.

All "unlimited" shared hosting will get to it's limit and, at some stage soon, I will be better off on a VPS but so far, nothing to differentiate between Byethost and Hostgator - except the price difference.

I would say that a good idea would be for you to create a blogspot blog. The only catch to this option is the fact that you would have to post every single day at least once in order to get more traffic to your blog. If you follow this all the way through, you will find that making money online is not difficult at all.

Active-domain.com, they are cheap and just as good as Godaddy!! Also netfirms.com is a good one! But if you want to start with a free hosting I would try the ones Alexa Smith suggested.

my opinion is to have your own hosting and domain. You can get hosting for like $5 or $6 a month and domain is $10 a year. Host a Wordpress.org blog. It`s much more powerful than a free blog. Get a great looking theme that fits your niche so it looks nice and professional.

With self hosted wordpress blog you have a lot of options and plug-ins that will help you optimize your blog. Update your blog with fresh relevant content regularly and Google will like you.

Do both!

This way you can learn how to use the different blog sites (and know more about those sites by having used them), test out different ways and compare the results, and you learn how to split test, which is something any marketer should do.
(Split testing in one sentence: Doing something in slightly different ways to find out what works best.)

While your own hosting and domain is the better choice, there is an advantage you will have with a blog on wordpress.com. It already has a high pagerank and google loves it. Your self hosted blog starts at zero. If you want to build a big site, host it yourself. If you want to make a fairly quick site to set up and forget, trying to catch some passive income from it, you can try a wordpress.com blog and see what happens.

As others here have said, your own domain and hosting is the way to go. You should always be willing to invest at least a little bit of money when it comes to making money online. I dealt with free hosts back in the day and they are a complete nightmare! Slow performance, no real customer service... but it just goes to show that you get what you pay for.
