When I had a retail business I was spending $1,800 per month on Yellow Pages. The ad was a little larger than a dollar bill.

I track every customer and the dollars spent, so I would know where I got the best bang for my advertising buck.

It used to pay for itself as much as 10 time over each month. Then gradually, starting about 2001, the amount of business I received from the Yellow Pages began to decrease each month. By 2008 it was down to a level that was not even bringing in enough each month to cover the cost of the ad.

What happened to cause this? The Internet. People were no longer using the Yellow Pages to locate merchants.

This also explains why the various Yellow Pages publishers have entered the web design business. They needed a way to keep business customers.

I also think you mean "whether" rather than "weather."

Yes I would steer clear of yellow pages these days. People use google to find companies and other contacts these days.

How much to advertise on Google, Facebook and the like?

There is no one price, because it depends on a range of factors including competition. Google Adwords has a bidding system where the hightest bidder gets the #1 spot for ads. Well it's not quite that straight forward because other factors are involved in that determination, but the point is, different niches and different keywords will cost different amounts.

I would recommend you start by visiting the Google Adwords website to find out a as much as possible about how they work and then come back to the WF with specific questions.

    Cheers

    Tim

I'd sign up for a Google Adwords account (it's free to do so). Inside you'll find a keyword estimator tool which will supply you with CPC estimations

Be sure when you do use Google Adwords that you create a good landing or squeeze page to capture the information of the potential client. I suggest also that you have a video about what you are offering.
