PayPal, American Express implicated in bank fraud :: TeaParty.org

"(WND) - A former employee of one of the world's largest international banks who has provided WND with more than 1,000 pages of evidence alleges the Internet giant PayPal and American Express are implicated in an international money-laundering scheme involving hundreds of billions of dollars.

The whistleblower, John Cruz, was a relationship manager in the southern New York region for the London-based global bank HSBC.

"I found many accounts where PayPal and American Express were used as conduits through which hundreds of thousands of dollars were deposited or withdrawn from HSBC customer accounts in a pattern of suspicious transactions that should have been reported to legal authorities under various banking statutes, including the Patriot Act," Cruz told WND.

Neither PayPal nor American Express responded to WND email and telephone requests for comment."

I just wanted to get your professional opinion, would you avoid using HSBC as a basic transaction account?

HSBC has great checking accounts for small business with no fee checking, online and mobile accounts, worldwide MasterCard and ATM access, and 5 free wire transfers a month; which is excellent for seamless international banking.

If you're international, you can also establish a Delaware LLC with an HSBC business account. This can be a good work-around for country or credit issues in establishing U.S. based accounts with many online and affiliate programs. The free wire transfer saves up to $45 a shot to transfer to your home country bank account.

In working with IM'ers wanting to establish a U.S. presence, I have usually recommended HSBC for these reasons as well their 8,500 branches worldwide.

One hurdle I've run into is HSBC's requirement that a branch employee must visit your place of business. If you're not near a branch, this makes it more challenging.

Recently, I sent a warrior client to his local HSBC branch in a region of Australia. After waiting over an hour to meet with someone, they finally called him back two weeks later.

Then they told him he had to have been in business two years and be cash-flowing over a million dollars a year before they would open an account. That's not HSBC's requirement, but some regions may vary. Banking in some countries is just plain ludicrous.

In some locations, bank officers (no matter what bank), are just plain idiots and only understand plain-vanilla brick and mortar operations.

I had similar issues with stubborn local branch officers with Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) in a region outside Toronto. They told my client he wasn't allowed to own a company in the U.S., but the corporate office resolved the issue.

Uninformed personnel are very common in any endeavor. Just continue to work your way through these until you find the right officials who really know the rules and can help you.

I often find the corporate headquarter's executive departments helpful for leverage in solving local issues.

Unfortunately, situations like this money laundering through HSBC accounts will only make all our lives more difficult. It's ironic this would happen at HSBC. It appears branch officials may have been covering up the fact that stolen and closed account ID's were used to open shell accounts.

Anytime PayPal gets busted we're all happy, but it's only going to make dealing with them more stringent.

As always, please consult a competent tax or professional adviser for assistance.

Hell yes! In fact, I stopped using ALL Banks about two years ago!
I don't trust any of them. They fail to protect your money, especially against a greedy government who can easily reach into your bank account, and they try any way possible to charge you overdraft fees.

The next story may be ... charges filed against former HSBC employee who stole thousands of private financial documents ....

Not sure why you would stop using PayPal because of this. Exactly how much scrutiny of you, your business, and every transaction you make do you want PayPal to undertake?

Not surprised - I always thought that their seizures of accounts had more to do with them juggling funds than it did being "cautious" about someone else's dealings. They are a corporation - a long as they keep racking in the funds, they don't care what happens to us.

Is this story appearing anywhere other than teaparty.org and WND? I can't imagine those sources are particularly reliable and credible.

    So here is what happened...

Paypal used to be much more focused on hiding these types of scams.

Then they discovered internet marketers and decided to start screwing with us all day long.

Over time it caused them to get sloppy in covering up their own scams.

    And now they got caught.

    The End.

Hey, maybe we Warriors can form a secret mass blackmail coalition and use this story as leverage to stop PayPal from targeting perfectly compliant WF sellers and shutting down their PayPal accounts because, as PayPal claims, we are "high risk" and "all selling the same thing" (per an actual phone conversion between PayPal and a big time seller heard somewhere in WF forums) ... heh-heh...

Nobody ever called us vindictive and got away with it.

    MBDirect
No we haven't been shut down but there's plenty discussion of the problem on the WF grapevine.

eh....I'm not really buying into it. Seems the article can only be found on fringe conservative websites/blogs. Would be a pretty big deal to just completely slip under the radar of everyone but these groups. It's been a month since the earliest blog post on it I could find; but nothing else has cropped up on the story either.
