Is this Normal for a web hosting company??

25 replies
Hey Guys..I got about six small sites on my web hosting company (Brain Host)
When I start my workday I will usually go through all the sites, check stats etc..

Lately it seems that sometimes my sites won't load or they will be 404'd for 15 minutes all the way up to a couple hours (sometimes I'll have to mash the refresh button about 4 or 5 times for it to load)

When I contact them they say crap like "it looks fine to us" . This is no bueno for me, especially if I have customers coming to my site to purchase my products, I'm cringing at the amount of sales I could have lost already.

How do I fix this? Change host's? buy something else? IDK...:confused:

    ask them to pull the server logs and take a look at it.. if your site is not loading, error 404, it will be in the logs. then look at the processes which was called to cause the "error".. work back from there..

    The next time that happens, go to HostTracker [Website Uptime Monitoring Service] and put your site in there.

    It will show you if it is up or down from lots of different locations and you can send that URL to your host. That also makes it so they can't use the lame excuse of "it's fine here".

    If this continues to happen I would start looking elsewhere for hosting.

      I am also facing same issue with GoDaddy, and I feel this HostTracker possibly help. Thanks for this.

      Anyway anyone have better shared host option, for multiple domains?

        Are you using Godaddy's new 4GH hosting plan or the old shared hosting?

    there are several really low cost uptime monitoring solutions out there. just google "uptime monitor" or website monitor...something like that.

    I would bet you could probably find one for free that would give you some more insight.

    There are a number of things that can cause pages not to load. There are literally thousands of places a website can get stuck. one of those places is with the host, but there are also isp's, your personal internet connection, and even stuff on your local machine that could cause pages not to load.

    basically I am saying you need to take a look at your error logs and maybe get an uptime monitor service to determine who is affected by the problem.

    it could be a dns problem, or even a cookie / cache problem. but yes, it could very well be a hosting problem as well.

    Little trick I learned years ago redirect the 404 pages and error pages to your main index.

    <br>
    <center>
    <meta HTTP-EQUIV="REFRESH" content="0; url=http://www.YOUR SITE URL GOES HERE"><!--

    -->

    just a thought.
    Thx

      I think he means the host's 404 page and not his own 404 page.

    No, it's not normal. As stated above, have the logs checked. When the sites are down, are you able to access your control panel? I looked at their site, but couldn't figure out what control panel they're using..

    Side note - on their homepage it says "North Carolina" but at the bottom of the page it say Akron Ohio on the other pages. I'm in North Carolina, and have never heard of them.

    For monitoring, use the one stated above, and also check out UpTimeRobot.com

    Other thought.. their servers are probably pulling high loads which won't let your site load and directing you to the 404 this is sometimes caused by overselling a server or ddos attacks.

      This is very true, especially since they're offering "unlimited" resources, which there's no such thing as.

    Use site monitoring service and show them the report and if those error still occur start looking for a reliable hosting.

    How much traffic do your sites usually get?

    Are you doing a lot of database queries?

    What could be happening is they are running CloudLinux or another kernel virtualization platform that limits sites that consume too much load frequently.

    Sometimes your host might restrict the number of SQL queries an hour, a setting called max_questions in php.ini

    Brain Host is shared hosting which always suspect because you're at the mercy of the other sites on that server, which is what it sounds like is happening to you.

    You can get a VPS and eliminate a lot of that for pretty cheap at places like myhosting.com. I think they're about $15 per mo...

      That just introduces a new set of problems, for one being it will cost you more the $15/month. That's just a basic VPS running the OS with some RAM and storage. You need a cPanel/WHM license (there's about $12/month), Fantastico (if you use it, that's $2-3/month), more RAM (another $5/month), and probably a faster processor than the single core 1Ghz they give you (another $10-$15/month). All in all, a VPS will run you $40-$80/month depending on how you set it up.

      If you are a technical person you could make due without a bunch of that (and just use LAMP), but that requires a lot of technical knowledge that most webmasters don't have.

    I had the same problem with FatCow - my sites were taking 60 seconds + to load, sometimes they were completely down. They said the same thing "not our problem it looks fine from here". I got soooooooooo mad and ended up switching to HostGator and haven't had any problems since.

    "unlimited" hosting plans often have very low concurrent connection thresholds sometimes as little as 50 which means if you are 51 you wont connect.

    They also may limit the number of mysql queries per hour etc.

      If you continue to have problems with your Webhost company, you need to ask to be moved to a different server.

      I was having a lot of problems with my sites on Cool Handle and asked to be moved. After they moved me the problem went away.

      They are counting on you to not complain. Don't put up with it. The squeaky wheel gets the grease.

    Change hosts. Doesn't happen to my sites on Hostgator. It isn't normal and their response isn't very helpful

    I'd suggest moving to more of a cloud based hosting.

    Also, look into cloudfront, and you will never face such issues.

    Hope that helps.

    Totally unacceptable. We have 200 sites at Rackspace. Outage for more than 2 minutes triggers an alert to several people. It's a disaster if it happens during US business hours and will light up the helpdesk immediately. Folks to expect outages have been with crappy hosting companies.

    If it continues to occur, and you reach the point where you want to change hosting companies... there's always Hostgator and Yahoo Web Hosting.
