Can I Sell A Free Domain

I got a free domain when I started my hosting account at Fatcow. Does anyone know if I am allowed to sell it? ( I am switching hosting in 1 1/2 months and shutting down the account)

You need to check this with Fatcow.

    Terms of service vary.

Hosting companies often use this as a method of "locking people in" to their hosting, if they want to retain the domain-name. From the customer's perspective, it's never a good idea to have your registration and your hosting in the same place. For all the reasons explained here.

However, Fatcow is pretty well-reputed for good service and good ethics, generally, so maybe you won't have a problem, in this case.

    Good luck!

Free domains come with the hosting. Their trick is to increase hsoting then offer a free domain as a sales pitch.

Thanks, but I'm afraid some of the information there - just like this thread itself! - was from 2012 and (regarding Fatcow) it's all very different now, because Fatcow is one of the hosting companies recently taken over by EIG. For me, that would be an overwhelming reason to avoid hosting there. Things change.

Regarding the principle of never registering a domain and hosting its attached website in the same place, that's just one of the constant, timeless things about the web, and is just as true in 2014 as it was in 2012 ... and it will be in 2016, too.

It's weird seeing old posts like this go up, and then people get annoyed when they say the information is outdated.clearly, this was from a long time ago, and not everything stays the same for long.

Do a whois search to determine if the domain name is registered to you or to FatCow. You can only sell something that belongs to you. As stated previously, most free domain names are a tool to gain hosting clients and remain registered to the hosting company under the domain registrar. Some hosting companies will allow you to buy out the domain for a price when leaving but only you will know whether it is worth it or not depending on the quality of the domain name.

Don't look now, but the OP asked his question three and a half years ago: he might have found out who owns it, by now?

Probably not, but if you have full ownership over it then certainly. You need to heck the terms. Many do not allow you.

Yes! You can sell it, If Fatcow provides you a Domain control manager where you can created EPP code which is required to transfer the domain. In Most cases hosting companies does not provide domain control panel when they provide free domains. So, check and verify it with your hosting company.

So, If I understand you right, the domain may or may not have already been sold and the original poster ha probably already moved on to a new host, or two, or three since this was originally posted?

Alexa, I think your problem lies in the fact that the font is way too small.

Fix that, and this should work better.
