I'm learning about Infractions

To help progress my IM career I'm trying to learn all about Infractions.

Questions:

1) Giving an infraction

* There's a warning option box. What does that do ?

* The Send New Private Message section
Is that an alternative to giving an infraction ?
Can you combine an infraction with a PM ?

2)Viewing an existing infraction

* Presumably anyone can reverse another's infraction except
the infracted person ?

There clearly needs to be a Dummy Guide on this subject. I'd be
happy to lash out say $27 for it. An affiliate program would
help.

Together with a dummy user who we can practise on, giving
him infractions, reversing them, reporting his posts etc.

    Hey Harvey,

Lol it's not as hard as it looks, but I can see why some people may need a practice dummy guide, and dummy user.

The warning optin box is for giving a warning. These infractions show up as yellow in the user's info, say when they post. These infractions "warn" someone they are doing something not accabtable in the forum, but don't count as far as banning goes.

If you don't use the warning optin, that user gets a red colored infraction which basically tells the user it's not a warning, but a full infraction, and whatever the person is doing, they should stop. These types of infractions usually rack up points, and after the user reach a specific amount of infraction points, they are banned for a set time.

This being said, keep in mind that the infractions on this forum only last an hour, so the effects between yellow (warning)and red (actual) infractions don't show as prominent differences except for the colors.

Some forums give full infractions that sometimes last for months, and the warnings are just that, a warning to stop what they are doing or else they will get penalized. Plus, admins set the infraction system up where if users get say 10 infractions, they automatically get banned.

I think Allen wanted to set up a system where users get warned they are doing something wrong before something drastic happens like where they get banned.

I often accompany the infraction with a PM ... sometimes, sometimes not depending on what the user did, and because I don't like to give infractions. I will explain to the user what's acceptable and what's not, and if I gave the infraction, basically tell them why I thought they deserved one.

As far as reversing infractions go, you are correct. Anyone except for the user getting the infraction can reverse infractions. It may take a few people to revers the infraction to get the job done, like it does with the report system. I'm not sure on this last part because I don't know how Allen has it set up in the backend.

    Hope this helps ...

Thank you Mary for such a clear explanation.

I might paste you answer into a one-page PDF book and sell
it as a WSO. Are you OK with that ?

Come to think of it I could announce this forthcoming WSO in
      my signature.

But I could get an infraction for doing that can't I ?

But hold on - suppose the person wanting to give me an
infraction doesn't know how to do it ?

      That's a puzzler.

Wait - he could buy the WSO then give it me.

      Problem solved.

Harvey, you should have been given an infraction a long time ago LOL

Actually, don't worry about infractions, they just go away. Anyone can give them and they will just disappear in time.

          No disrespect Harvey...

But don't you run a very popular forum yourself, and have for some time?

              No, not looking to offend.

I'm a fan of your forum...

The question just kind of threw me off.

Just wanted to make sure I would be following and responding to the same person.

If I ever wanted good advice about CB.

                  Hey Harvey,

Don't worry about infractions - if you get one I'll reverse it (unless I've given it to you in the first place).

A man of your seniority should be worrying about infections in this cold weather. There are a lot of nasty viruses going round - and not just the ones in your books!

                  I didn't see any sig...

You were one of the first I started following in IM, it's nice to see you here.

But with all the user names being hijacked, just wanted to be sure I wasn't following someone else.

Since PHPBB don't have the infract feature, I can understand the question.

        Hi Harvey,

Yeah, I'm fine with that. It's yours to do what you will with it.

And no, you wouldn't get an infraction for putting the WSO link in your sig lol, only of you point to your sig in the actual post and do some self promotion.

Yes, problem's solved, now get to work on that WSO.

I just have 1 question for ya, why in the devil would you put up a WSO when the info was posted in public view for everyone in the forum to see? :p

Don't feel bad because warning and actual infractions go away in an hour.

Apparently an infraction downgrades you from a Lord to a Mr.

          Harvey
That's not an infraction. That's a fraction inside IN.
An infraction would be ==> 3in/4, or 1/in2, or 1-in5/8

Actually, even those would be... ininfractions. But they're closer.

You see, it's lucky I raised this thread to get infractions explained properly.
