Forget about finding a niche.
I, for one, think it's cool. I'm sure it only applies to certain individuals.
So firstly, forget anything you have ever heard about finding a certain niche:
Fishing rods.
Tents.
Survival books.
Bla, bla, bla...
If you set yourself up in an individual niche you are limiting the amount of things you can promote.
Secondly: Targeting a demographic. I like this method, but, it's not quite there.
OK, you can promote more things to the individual. Fishing rods; tents... You get the idea. Trouble is: it's excluding people who fall out of a certain range (sorry fishermen, I'm blatantly using the idea of 40-60 yr old men as the only men who fish, in my example).
Now this is what I want to target...
... An IDEA.
Yes, an idea. I'll give you an example.
What can you sell to them?
Fishing rods and fishing books; tents and hammocks; survival books and penknives; cargo pants and sandals; books about living off the land and books autobiographies of adventurers.
Who can you promote to?
Everyone. Any age; any sex.
Why is this a good idea?
Well it could turn viral. That's to say, someone would much rather share your "living on a desert island" site with their friends on twitter, rather than a site about fishing rods.
It's cool; it's funky.
Lots of stuff to do with it.
Anyway, this is what I've chosen to do (not the example above), but hopefully for someone trying to choose a niche, it might give you a few extra ideas, and you might want to build up a future authority site that us people would love to read.
Cheers
