My #1 Tip That Exploded My Business in 2011

by Tech19
31 replies
A little over a year ago, I walked into my bosses office and handed in my 2 weeks notice. She said I didn't need to worry about fulfilling the 2 weeks, and they would pay me anyways. I considered that my bonus..

We all have our different reasons for wanting to make money online or start our own business so I'll spare you those details. All I can tell you is that it was an incredible feeling. So I really got to work last year, and the one thing that caused more breakthroughs than anything was

helping as many people as I absolutely could
...

I took the focus off of "whats in it for me" and started to put all my focus in helping other people achieve their goals. I was genuine, honest, and I couldn't believe the results. Not only in my online business, but my overall enjoyment of my day to day activities. This doesn't mean that I never made any money from these efforts, but it wasn't my source of motivation. The connections I have made, conversations I have had, business partners I have teamed up with have been amazing.

The reason I share this is because I remember being scared for a long time. Scared to put myself out there, scared that I wouldn't have anything valuable to offer. Then I realized that after 4 years online, I have A LOT to offer. Your knowledge is often much more valuable than you think.

Again, I understand that we are all in this to make money. But I promise that you can do both. When you do, you will be amazed at how things fall into place.

So very true, the more you help others, the more you get in return.

One important thing I have learned, is you always get something back from helping others, but the help/reward/money whatever may not be from the person you helped!.

It works, and it works every time.

    Amazing but true.

Absolutely no question about that with me. I went from working 40 hours/week to somewhere closer to 70, and freakin love every minute of it.

Yeah, I totally agree and I have heard so many really (happy)successful people who say the same thing. Stop trying to find the money, start thinking about providing a solution to people's problem and provide them with it and the money will find you.

I guess, we could all use this lesson in our everyday lives and not just when it comes to making money.

very well said my friend.. That type of thinking made me show my personality more in my videos.. I was listening to an audiotape on public speaking and it said to watch your videos with no sound. You'll see how boring you are..LOL...

It also gave a great tip to look at you being scared to share what you know as you being selfish... This helped me alot in getting what I have to say out..

Thanks though man.. Needed to see that..

I love that! It's amazing how uncomfortable it can be to watch yourself on video. Gives you a really great look from the other side though as you notice things you never knew you did (and probably over, and over, and over)

    Right on.

This is exactly what it's all about imho.

If you can help people you will have access to endless wealth. People are after knowledge and 9/10 they are after a fast track to learn something. If you can fulfill that - well you are laughing.

Really it is nothing special, and you hear the same stuff from a lot of successful people here. I began to focus on a few simple things.

#1 How can I grow my list
#2 How can I give the people on that list what they really want

I know you hear this stuff A LOT, but it just works.

Most people focus on traffic first. How many times have you heard "I have tons of traffic but no sales" When I am creating a new campaign, or getting into a new niche, I focus on conversions first. When I feel everything is optimized, I drive a little bit of traffic. Then I analyze the results and see how I can increase conversions. Make some adjustments, then more traffic. I do this until I get the numbers where I want, and then really ramp up the traffic.

Once you have something that you know will convert, then put your focus on the traffic. I see it so many times that people spend hours and hours and tons of cash sending traffic to something that will never make them money. Simply getting visitors will not get the job done.

My big site is in a self-help niche.

Early last year, as I was digging through my analytics, I started reading the longtail searches that brought visitors to my site - not scanning through the list, reading it.

Reading through the questions that people ask and hearing the pain in their words completely changed my perspective.

From that moment, I stopped writing for Google and started writing for the person who needs my help. As of January, that site's income is is 21x what it was last January. A side benefit is that only 15% of my traffic comes from "higher volume" keywords. Most is either from referral/direct traffic or longtail phrase searches. This means that even if Google burps, my traffic won't take much of a hit.

One last point, it's MUCH easier to stay enthusiastic about a project that really helps people as opposed to doing it for "traffic," "conversions," or "sales." Of course, the more I do the first, the more I get of the other three.

That is absolutely awesome stuff. The best part is, you probably had no idea that it would ever turn out that way and stabilize your business that much. It just goes to show that if you do things the right way results will follow.

Providing people with a product that they need in exchange for money is very basic, not really a tip or something.
Thanks anyways, I am sure this will still help a lot of people.

Nice to hear the positive results and enjoyment you are getting, I think so many people get too caught up in needing to make money quickly that they lose a lot of their focus and direction. Ultimately these people fail a lot and end up unhappy and bitter with the concept of internet marketing/ making money online.

I often just help my family with online marketing, their business is retail computing. It's nice to see their excitement at the possibilities of what can be achieved by even the simplest of efforts which not many of the public even know about. You don't have to be a guru to just go help others get online with their businesses, i share your delight in helping others.
