Building my own network of prospects and customers. Google could disappear tomorrow and it's effect on my business would be marginal at best. Building a list was one of the biggest breakthroughs.

Look at this forum, it's a network of people that belong to this community, and the forum owner, Allen, can reach all of us with a simple Private Message or an e-mail or any number of other ways.

    Hey Nate,

My #1 breakthrough? An egg timer and scripture verses about diligence.

I set my egg timer to 40 minute increments and try to get as much done in that 40 minutes as possible. Then, when 40 minutes is up, I have to stop no matter what I'm in the middle of. I take a 5-10 minute break AWAY from my computer (browsing Youtube doesn't count as a break, I actually have to get AWAY from the computer) then come back for another 40 minute session.

40 minute increments can get me through 3 hours of solid productive time pretty easily.

Awesome idea, I've done that before but with 50 minutes..I think 40 is a better goal But it is amazing if you just focus for 3 hours a day how much you get done.

Having an article successfully syndicated. I got lucky. I had no idea what article syndication was when I wrote my first successful article, but when I saw it take off I new that that was the way ahead.

Delegating work so I could focus only on the most high value activities. I did this before I could "afford" to, best decision I've made yet.

Building a decent list of people who are interested in the products I create. Before I was always searching for traffic, trying methods that never seemed to pay off, maybe I was no good at them?

But when I rearranged my thought process, and began capturing all those visitors I did get, I found that the traffic I needed was always there, and all I have to do is keep adding to it. It almost felt like the traffic was coming to me once I began building my list. I always was told to start building a list, and finally glad I started to do so! That's my number one breakthrough...

I haven't had my big breakthrough yet, but I think joining Kenster's Six Figure Alliance is going to get me pointed in the right direction. I think for beginners, picking one method and sticking with it until you master it is a good idea, rather than jumping from shiny object to shiny object.

    FOCUS!!!

and a close second was realizing and treating IM just like any other business I ever created offline.

With all the headlines promising easy money with little or no effort, even I was a bit convinced that some how this was going to be something different than what I had to do to start a business offline. And indeed, it is different in many aspects, but it still requires focus, a plan and work.

Once I realized that and focused on one method of making money online until I could do it rather easily, things really opened up. (and that was only 4 months ago.)

and for me, the thing I focused on was list building.

A timer, activities to occupy my children, and just sitting down and getting the work done. Realizing that there's no magic pill that's suddenly going to make this easy, but that it's well worth it not to miss these years with them.

For me it was two major things.

1 ) Focus - I came up with a plan and I committed to sticking to it

    2) Chunking it down - Instead of aiming to make $100,000 a year and being overwhelmed, I decided to first try to make $5 a day. Once I could do this consistently, I then moved up to $10 a day, then to $20, $50, $100 etc...

If people just did this, they wouldn't give up so easily. Think of it like a game in the beginning where your goal is to see if you can just make $5 for one day. Then if you can repeat it again and again...

    Worked well for me.

Works every time! My productivity has skyrocketed since I started doing that. Something about 50 minutes just seems daunting to my brain. I know it's really not that long, but when I think "50 minutes," my subconscious says "almost an hour." When I think "40 minutes," my subconscious says "just over a half hour."

It's only a 10 minute difference, but it makes everything seem so much more manageable somehow.
