Games website strategy?

Hi all,

I read a post on here yesterday about making money from creating a gaming website. I'm intrigued as I want to know what's involved. My thoughts around a strategy is the following, but I wanted to know if it's as simple as this:

- find out which games are due to be released in, say, 6 months
- choose a game based on what appears to be popular
- use Market Samurai to find a keyword around this game and look at SEOV figures to determine if the keyword is profitable (i.e. SEOV > $1,000?)
- create a WP site around the keyword
- generate interest by blogging about the release and include a forum(?)
- add a link to Amazon for the pre-order
- add an email capture feature
- when the game is released, send an email to database with details of purchase.

Have I missed anything? Is this the type of strategy that's used for gaming websites?

Many thanks,

Jodie

yep that works really well. Usually there's not that much competition, especially if you build your site early. One way to monetize this is Amazon, yes. But you can also monetize this with CPA offers. You can put some banners on your site "Get Call of Duty 3 free" or something like that. A simple email submit will convert high. If you choose a really popular game you'll find CPA offers almost with 100% certainty. MaxBounty has a lot of gaming offers.

    Hope that helps.

Your plan's pretty solid, Jodie. It's pretty much the same thing if you're going to look at the wide picture for the official sites of the games themselves. Try checking out some of the games that will come out in a few months from now. A blog's definitely going to be helpful for this. The best content that you can write about would be the things that the players can expect when it's released. Let's take Capcom's fighting games as an example. They release content after a certain interval that shows new characters and new features of the game.

Thanks very much for your responses.

Alen, I have a few questions:

      - should I build the site at least 6 months beforehand? Just that getting to no. 1 in Google for the keyword could take a few months.

      - 'Get Call of Duty 3 free' - where would the banners link to? Is this something MaxBounty offer?

      - As I live in the UK, should I only be gearing towards UK games consumers or global?

Gerald, thanks for the info. Are there any particular console games that convert better i.e. I would imagine more will play PS3 games compared to PC games?

We do have Call of Duty campaigns. I'm happy to speak more with you about them - I'm on AIM and Skype.

It actually depends on the type of game that we're talking about. For the PC, I think the shooter games (both first and third person) and the adventure games would be good.

For fighting games, I'd go for XBox360 or the PS3.

For sports games, any gaming rig would be fine.

Oh, one more thing. Is there an example of a successful gaming website? I read that some IMs have made 6 figure sums from these websites, but surely they must have a finite life once consumers have purchased the game...

Just a quick bit of advice from a gamer:

You may want to focus on console titles, because the PC market is completely dominated by Steam and EA Origins, among many other distribution platforms. Personally, I always make sure to buy my PC games from Steam if I can help it, because their service is just excellent.

You don't get a similar kind of service for console titles, because they still have to be bought at a brick and mortar. If you want to focus on mainstream titles, consoles are probably where it's at.

PS: Alternatively if you want to dip into the indie market, the PC niche is still possible if you can get an agreement with the developers themselves, since they will need all the help they can get to market their games as opposed to the industry giants.

Good luck! I hope to delve into this niche myself someday.

    Thanks very much.

Stong, great tip about console games. It suddenly occurred to me today that I wouldn't be able to use the game name in the URL? If I were to choose a keyword, I would want the name of the game in the URL, but chances are this will be a copyright issue?

Does anyone have any experience on targeting different markets in the UK and US? I don't know whether to buy www.mysite.com or www.mysite.co.uk. Does it matter? Are games typically released on different dates around the world?

MaxBounty, I had a look at the official website but can't see whether I can use if living in the UK.

    Many thanks.
