Should I open my blog as a subdomain or as a category within the site?

Hello

Well the title pretty much sums my question up, I have a friend who sells Fake Grass, and he wants to rank higher in google. I told him to open up a blog about fake grass / gardening ecc... to have content and more keywords.
Thing is should he open up a subdomain like www. subdomain. grasswebsite . com?
Or just a category like www. grasswebsite . com / blog ?
Which one is better for SEO?
That is not his website obviously!
Thank you!!!

Sub-domain is good if he is already using the main domain page to promote his product or service. I would personally advice him to get a domain name if he does not have one and start building it with quality content, that way he will be in full control.

Yep, he is using the main domain to promote his product ( which is an EMD ), so I guess I'll tell him to set up a sub domain Thanks

I would put it in a subfolder. It's less work than setting up a subdomain and you can still squeeze your keyword into url.

A subdomain isn't that much hassle, but I don't think there would be much of a return for the effort of setting it up.

I think we'll set up a subdomain because we don't mind the hassle that much!

  • Hi,

Since you mentioned that you're asking in reference to known and tested SEO best practices:

I recommend getting a new domain for the blog, and hosting it with a different C IP. The blog can be his or her gardening hobbyist journal, while the site can be his or her official business website. I also suggest, for the blog and the site, to get expired domains with relevant, well-aged exact match domain names, existing active backlinks on contextually relevant sites, possible existing brand equity and traffic due to those active backlinks and valid Google PR (to pass PR juice to and from the blog and the site, as well as to and from pages where you'll be posting backlinks pointing to the blog and the site)...

    Hope this helps...

  • Actually, he can ride the domain authority and put it on a subfolder as long as he is going to be creating high quality content. The blog on a subdomain will have to build its own credibility.

So, if his site has authority of any kind and he is going to create quality content, subfolder is the way to go. If he is going to put PLR and fiver written articles on it, put it on a subdomain.

You can go either way, the blog will definitely add authority on time to the main page if it is quality content that you are going to put on it.
