Which microphone for videos and webinars? Why I can't use collar mic?

Hello, I want to get warriors reviews about a good mic to record videos, interviews and webinars. I've already gone through a lot of threads, but I do've more questions.

I saw that warriors are recommending diff. mics and they all are good, but my question is why we (as internet marketer to record videos) can't use COLLAR MICROPHONES like journalists, news readers and a lot of TV hosts use these days?

Thanks
Regards

You want to find a USB mic if you can....you can get them pretty cheap off of Amazon.

I use the RAZER Megalodon but that's because I bought it for PC gaming

Nothing stopping you using a collar mic.

I personally prefer a headset mic for webinars, recording narration on Camtasia, Powerpoint etc I like Plantronics kit and have the DSP500. It records great quality audio, but any USB headset over $40 from one of the main manufacturers will do the job.

For shooting video, I use a Sony wired or Audio Technic wireless lavalier mic or a Rode Shotgun VideoMic depending on the nature and conditions of the shoot.

Sure we can! A "collar mic" or "lapel mic" or "headset mic" works very well, indeed. These lavelier mics are worn in tv, film, theater, and video productions and can provide excellent sound quality and convenience, particularly if you are moving around the set or stage.

One of the best is the Sanken COS-11D (available as a headworn mic, also), but an often acceptable "second" is the TRAM TR50. They are both miniature, omnidirectional, with wide frequency response and very high-quality sound.

A lot of marketers opt for a simple but versatile and "good-enough" USB studio mic like the Samson C03U with shockmount and boom, for mostly static shoots and recordings (for example, while sitting at the computer, or interviewing someone around a table).

Give a "lav" a try for a dynamic video, it will open up possibilities!

Do the Sanken and TRAM product clean plosion free recordings (assuming proper use)? Will these plug straight into a CAMCORDER and work without any additional amplification/power?

      I second this.

I use the same headset as well and it does the job fairly well...just adjust the microphone and you're well off. You can grab one off ncix or amazon...

I use just a simple "mic and earphones" headset that I had lying around, can't remember the price but it was oretty much an "el cheapo". I recommend you borrow something cheap and try it out, experience the quality, or lack thereof, and go from there. Unless you have lots of spare cash, of course.... and $40 isn't that expensive.

I've noticed in Kenster's videos he uses a lapel mic. I don't know what kind it is, but it seems to work well.

Keep in mind too that long term you may need several microphones. It depends on your usage. You mentioned interviews. That depends on if you are mobile or not.

If you are at a desk a large diaphragm mic like an Audio Technica AT2020USB will have unbelievable frequency response and adds low frequencies making you sound big and professional.

If you are ON CAMERA then a lapel mic is good and can be purchase very cheaply if you are (again) at a desk by using a WIRED lapel mic like an Audio Technica ATR35s.

If you are MOBILE (hostile and agile ) you would probably want a WIRELESS lapel mic for yourself. But if you have to interview another person you may want a handheld.

And a headset mic is perfectly fine for many applications at your desk as well if you don't mind the "geek gear". Many people use that option and it certainly is fine if you aren't "on camera". The headset mic has an advantage that it stays in front of your mouth if you turn or move better than most but the disadvantage that they often "blast" and "pop" with breathing or words that start with the letter "p" for example.

So you can see that "best" is relative to usage a good portion of the time.

Best of luck with your search.

      Rex

Another vote for the Audio Technica AT2020 USB.

That's exactly what I use for all my videos and it produces a great sound. If you are only going to be sitting at a desk then you are much better off using a desktop microphone because they will generally give better quality than a lapel. Only use a lapel mic if you have to.

        Horses for causes.
