Article Writing. I Don't Think I Can Do It.

Hi all, new here.

I lost my income online some 8 months ago and hit a brick wall with bad depression. After finally getting back to my feet I decided to start writing articles.

I put an ad on Fiverr offering 500 words on any subject for $5. I got a handful of jobs and completed them to the best of my ability. People were amazed with the quality, but I assumed these people wasn't expecting much and were being friendly.

I got an email from a guy offering to give me a job to write 1,000 articles over 12 months at $8 per article with 50% payment upfront. He was impressed with my writing ability and the fact I could research on any topic and get the facts spot on (his words).

I'm just as amazed as he seems to be with my writing ability because I always assumed my writing is mediocre.

I'm in a state of self doubt at the moment. I've never had my work reviewed before, but I've grew up needing praise from others in order to value my worth.

Anyone ever felt like this?

If anyone wants to review my writing I will do a 400 word article for you. For reviewing it I will let you keep it and use it so feel free to throw a topic at me. I'd prefer it if another writer could review my work.

Or, throw a topic at me public and I will post my article public so the community can comment, or offer advice.

Looks like a great community by the way.

Welcome aboard, and never underestimate how good of a writer you most likely are. There are SO many bad writers out there, you would be surprised. Why not try writing on Elance or ODesk, etc. as well?

Thank you Dayne. I considered ODesk and other freelance sites but I don't have much of a portfolio or track record with writing articles. Is it difficult to get clients when you first start out on freelance sites?

Key words: "I don't think I can do it".

      Of course you can.

You just proved it by writing a post that will get responses explaining to us why you think you can't do it.

Use that same mindset when writing their articles.

"Those who say they can't and those who say they can are both usually right."

Your customers are happy with you to the extent that you got an offer for a job. Self doubt happens to everyone when they get their first break.

It sounds like you have a success story there. I like it how you didn't let failure overcome you.

I did some fanpage designing online, the first clients appreciated my work but later on I got so many critics, I thought it was wasting my time so I gave it up to focus on my business.

By the way, I will be glad to review your work, may be you can write for me sometime.

    Paddypower,

    Welcome to the forum.

    WOW!!!

Let me tell you from someone who has owned my own businesses most of my adult life....the market is the BEST indicator of something.

    Supply and demand.

If you are getting work and someone is offering you a long term deal, you are doing GREAT for that market EVEN if someone else you feel could do it better that is not the point, the point is doing your best and offering a marketable, profitable product or service.

    I HIGHLY COMMEND YOU!

    and that is no joke.

Do you know how many people on here are struggling for years and have yet to make a dime on anything they have done? A lot!

The fact that you did something, is in itself commendable.

The fact that you made money doing it is even better.

If this is a profitable thing for you to continue to do, by all means keep doing it.

And if you run into any self-doubt (as we all do some times) do whatever it takes to talk yourself out of it.

Also, include some encouraging emails into your daily routine.

I get daily emails from Home of Abraham-Hicks Law of Attraction -- It All Started Here! and Kathy Hadley Life Coach

plus I read a few pages from inspirational and motivational success books every day.

Good luck and keep up the good work.

BTW, be prepared for criticism as you become more and more successful and get ready to ignor it all.

I used to tell myself, you know you are really doing well, when people take time and effort out of their own lives to criticize YOU!!!

As an aside, most celebrities figure they have finally MADE IT, when they get on the cover of gossip magazines.

As any good publicist will tell you, any publicity is good publicity.

I once had some competition in one of my locations pay money to place an ad on the radio in their market slamming me when I was away from them and most of their market had probably never heard of me.

Even though it was a slam to me, it got my name out and a ton of people came to our business to see for themselves. Even though we were about a 30 minute drive for most of those people, our business increased......and all from a radio ad that was supposed to have slammed us!!!

    LOL

That other business actually helped us out and was out of business in less than 8 months.

Do what you do, do it the best you can, offer good customer service and forget the naysayers or those who criticize....even the ones in your head!

On oDesk it can be. I use oDesk for about 80% of my income. When I first started, I took a few jobs that were much lower than my desired pay rate to get some good feedback in order to get better paying jobs.

With oDesk, it is important to remember that most employers are just looking for cheap work, so it can be hard to find a good employer but still expect amazing quality, so you really have to weed through the job postings to find someone who will appreciate your ability to write and will pay you adequately for it. Another thing to remember is that there are thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of people who will work for literally .50/hour - this might work for wherever they are living, but it doesn't satisfy an American cost of living. Don't let employers bully you into a lower wage or try to con you into a lower introductory rate.

I hope I didn't scare you. I love oDesk and the clients that I have retained through that site have been great.

If you have any other questions about using oDesk feel free to add me on Skype and I'll help you the best that I can.

Thank you for the kind words and thank you @TopKat22

I think it's the depression and anxiety that makes me think the way I do. Something I've battled with for a long time. But I do thank everyone for the comments and taking the time to reply.

I will post a couple of articles public later today as I'm sure others will have a little advice for me to further improve my writing skills.

I think I'm just going to focus now and get the work done.

I have battled and won against the worst form of anxiety, agoraphobia. 7 years of it along with the panic attacks.

      Thanks dad, for the abuse!

Get to it, make the best of what you have to offer. This is your life, you already know you can write.. go get 'em!

Hi PP (what's the latest odds by the way :p),

Clearly you can string several sentences together whilst maintaining a healthy punctuation/errors ratio.

Your writing skills are fine. Certainly better than average. Undoubtedly better than mine. Everyone in this thread can see that.

Depression is debilitating. I've seen and felt it myself from the inside and outside.

A few years ago I was stubbing ciggies out on myself, and carving stupid messages into my flesh with a stanley knife.

      They're still visible.

To most people, that'd be shocking. It shocks me now looking back. It shocks me that I felt angry enough, or sad enough, or bad enough to do such a thing...

I don't regret it though...I think they call it 'character building' these days, lol.

A long way of saying -- You CAN be in control of your life, and you have already demonstrated you have the ability to do so.

You Sir, are awesome. Take it from me. People pay good money for well-written articles. You deliver. End of.

      Cheers,
      Steve

Let me recommend iWriter. I have no affiliation to the site other than the fact that I have written articles there. After 30 articles you can become an elite writer. I can make $20 an hour writing articles as an elite writer.

Of course, writing that much makes my mind go numb...

    Congrats on coming back.

I don't quite understand why you're in a state of self-doubt, you've been handed an $8,000 job based on your high quality... That's a fairly strong indicator to me that you're doing a darn good job!

I just did the math quickly and that's only 2-3 articles per day over the entire year, that's a pretty good deal for 8K in my opinion... If you look at it like "I have to write 1000 articles" then ya, it sounds like a lot... but 2-3 per day is definitely do-able, especially with 1/2 the cash up front.

Many would love to be in your position... And who knows this could be a long-term highly lucrative endeavour for you, keep positive.

    Good job.

As someone who has written articles for YEARS, this is totally normal. Really. I still have moments where I question my sanity for my career choice. I get praise but I will get paralyzed on a particular subject and tell myself I can't write. It's crazy because I can. Push through it and when you get over that hump the feeling is amazing.

Create a file on your computer of work you are proud of. When you have those feelings of self doubt just pull out that file and remind yourself you ARE a good writer. When you receive words of praise from anywhere on your writing (because you will), stick that in the same file. I call that my "Encouragement File." It's like medicine for the soul. Pull it out as needed. Use it as long as needed.

Just know what you're experiencing is completely normal. So don't beat yourself up over this. It will only make it worse. Just know you're in good company. Make that Encouragement File and it will do wonders for you!

I release about 5 articles a day, and never write a single one of them. Use article builder if you got the loose change to save yourself a butt load of time.

Also, I just got done cutting this video so you can see how I used nested spin code to make my articles unique (without using more software) -- totally free way to do nested spinning.

self-doubt is part of the game, my friend. It's natural, and it will happen throughout the rest of your career, I would wager in any career that you choose. We will always question how we look to other people. You just, ultimately, can't let that affect your ability to make money… Adopted the fake it until you make it mentality in this regard. Pretend like you are confident until the monies in your hand, and then you can shake it off and have nothing but pride for yourself, and you realize "hey that wasn't so bad".

    $8 x 1,000 articles = $8,000

That ain't bad for a single order...I'll tell you that most writers on this forum would KILL for that. I know anxiety and depression suck, and that they can take away a lot of your confidence and drive to move forward, but you just have to do it anyways.

when I have to do a task that I know that I don't want to do, I take some time to write out every single possible outcome that could happen as a result of me doing the task… If I have to do cold calling for example, what's the worst that could happen?

    - My lead screams at me, cusses me out, and tells me never to call again. (Worst)
    - As soon as my lead realizes the nature of my call, they hang up on me. (Pretty bad)
    - Nobody picks up the phone. (Neutral, at least I haven't wasted time)
    - I get into a long conversation about my service and they still don't buy. (Eh, they could still change their mind)
    - I make a call, everything goes perfectly, and I make a sale (BINGO!)

See? And beyond that, if you anticipate your reaction to each of these things ahead of time, then it seems even more tolerable.

    I hope that helps!

Congrats !! It sounds like you have something really good going on there. I am a prolific writer, but I save it for my own Blogs . However, being a Writer who sticks solely to that is a great way to earn money and make a legitimate businesst.

There are many people who do this full time.......... and as you get more experience and more recognition your demand will be higher and subsequently you can charge higher prices.
Keep it going !! I sense a bright future for you
