Funny Way to Build Traffic

Justin,

Pretty interesting. One thing that I like to do in analytics is take a look at my referral traffic sources, and see if there are any websites that are sending me good traffic without much effort on my end.

This is simple, and fairly common knowledge I assume but it does work, and by doing this you can uncover some new traffic sources & ramp up some underused traffic sources that may already be right under your nose!

I check my analytics too but there are some sites that send me a lot of traffic that have absolutely nothing to do with my niche. One site in particular is a forex site and it sends me referall traffic all the time. I went to have a look at why and I have no idea where the link is.

It's a very odd situation.

More than likely they are sending you spam - meaning that they will try to sneak in backlinks into your site. It happens with my sites all the time.

I think he just explained why.... I call this "referrer spam" or "log spam".

They have a link on their page... and autoclick it in an iframe. now you get FAKE web hits, coming from clients, which you of course click to go find out why. Not only that, but it burns up your server resources for an expensive FAKE wordpress page view, including all the images and everthing else that includes.

Imagine an iframe w/ in another iframe... Say with a javascript w/ 5 links that auto click at 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 seconds after page load... he could send "referrer spams" to 5 web sites for every one visit to his own site. Get it?

He wouldnt want to use an actual permanent link on on your web site... then he'd only spam one blogger per page of your own... instead he'd use a database of blog pages and hit several per page VIEW on his site.

Interesting. I have traffic coming from sites unrelated to my site too so I wouldn't feel right directing my traffic to them.

Hmmmmm.

BTW, being a math geek, an accounting major & master, keeping stats on several offline businesses I owned for years and now having websites, I LOVE checking anlaytics!!!

To me, it all ends up being a numbers game.

I don't really see it as a traffic builder, especially as the last time I clicked on a referrer link it was a porn site and my computer got a virus from it.

It's probably better to use trackbacks... I've got some good traffic with them that have also lead to more backlinks and JV's.

Here's how I understand it to work...

Find a site in your niche that:

A) Uses Wordpress

b) Updates on a regular basis

Link to one of their articles from one of your articles and it shows up on their WP comments page inside the admin dashboard.

Spammers have been abusing this technique forever, but when it's done properly it can be effective if you're consistent - the big blogs are constantly receiving trackbacks, both spam and real so you need to make sure yours stands out over time by using 'attention grabbing' anchor text.

Doing it for real instead of how the spammers use trackbacks is more effective, imo.

Smaller blogs will pay attention quicker than the big ones.

I do check my analytics account pretty regularly. However, I am just interested in knowing the keywords which are bringing in traffic. This trick won't work for me. Thanx a lot for sharing it anyways - may prove helpful for other Warriors.

That's a good way of getting more traffic. But if I'm gonna do that (I know this will be one heck of a Captain Obvious comment), I'd post my links on a site where my stuff would be related. It's also a good way of interacting with other blog owners and keeping in touch with some of the experts in your field, maybe.

I wouldn't say that exactly. I use this method a lot but not necessarily to get traffic. When I'm crafting a post, I like to link to other blog posts that have really dealt in-depth with a topic that is related to, but not essentially my main topic. This is not for traffic but to help my readers. And yeah, it does generate traffic. Sometimes.

What you're doing is not spamming... you are actually providing a backlink, where the spammers are just blasting out page loads w/o any links.

Nobody here is complaining about any legit backlinks :-)

Its not a good idea, because outbound link does not help to bring traffic on your website . if I follow ur way then I only have a visit from that website who's link I placed in my website. and no any traffic

Hi,

Looking at the stats on your own sites can be a tremendous source of information to you and one which I believe many marketers fail to take advantage of.

There are some great tools in your website hosting provider's CPanel and all you have to do is click to take a look.

The simplest one is Awstats and it's worth taking two minutes to see what is there. You'll find the keywords that people have used to find your site and this information is likely to be different from your Google Analytics data because of the way it is collated and filtered.

You can find keywords that you had not thought of and also if yuo are getting a lot of visits from people putting in similar keywords that you do not want. For instance, you may be getting a load of freebie hunters if searches are dominated by terms including "free."

The idea here was not to use "referrer spam".

Consider this a way to possibly build joint ventures.

I'm not saying spam their websites or anything. I'm saying you can help webmasters find your link by doing this (sometimes).

It's a way to build relationships indirectly with other people in your industry.

Now of course, it's not going to work all the time, but I would only do this if I wanted to get a very specific persons attention.

For example, when people link to my sites, I want to see why. I want to see what reason traffic is coming from them.

SO, this doesn't mean that YOU have to go through the link. It means you should be building traffic to their sites.

You can say that this isn't a way to build traffic to your sites, but why? What if you built traffic to someone elses site (real traffic) and they then did the same to you.

Get out of your shell, try things out. Don't cheat the system, just use common sense

There is a grey/black hat method which could certainly account for some of the unusual log entries.

Essentially, some people use software where they plugin their URL's that get used for the referrer info. Then it goes out and hits a whole bunch of sites that have their awstats details publicly available and your url's appear in the referer stats.

I definitely would NOT recommend this method as it is very spammy and could well end up getting your site deindexed.

With all due respect, I really think it's the way you use it. If you're using it to 'game' the system, it could spell trouble. But what comes to mind is the term Curation. Linking to other blogger's posts to give yours more value. Surely, that can't be wrong?:confused:

If the traffic is targetted, it is indeed of value.
If its junk traffic, its just using your bandwidth as apparently its not gonna be of any use to you!!

the only thing that this traffic can help you is reduce the alexa which alexa booster can also do lol!!

If you don't get it. If you place a link to someones website on your site or just click on their link on another website/page, etc. They could then in turn check out your website.

Here's another tip.

Imagine you already have good traffic, but you want to create relations with another site/page/channel. A good way to do this is by directing your traffic to their site/page/channel. If you do that, they could in turn be very grateful and return the favor

P.S. These methods are tried and tested and they work. It's just another way of building traffic indirectly.
