I need to make the home page on www.thepressreleasesite.com into a static page, so it can be more of a sales page. I want a link on the top menu bar that leads to the blog portion of the site. And I need an optin form on the home page; I can provide the aweber code for that.

    Does that sound difficult?

      Hey Dana,

It depends on the theme but this should do the work:

      1. Create a "New Page", this is the one that is going to go in the front page.

Then go to Settings>Reading and select the Front Page displays static page. Then pick the one you made from the drop down menu.

      2. As for the navigation bar, it depends on the theme, but in most cases it can be found in some area of the Appearance>Widgets.

Then you can simply select the page you want a link to.

      3. For the opt-in, create it in any HTML editor and then go to Appearance>Widgets, look for the area you want to place it in (this also depends on the theme) insert a "Text" Widget and paste the code from the HTML editor.

      Done!

It is pretty easy to achieve that. Just create the page in WP that you want as your home page and create a page for your blog page (nothing in the blog page, just the title).

Then go into your WP admin panel
==>Settings ==>>Reading ==>Click the front page displays a 'static page' and select the page that you created for that situation. Then for the 'posts page' select the page you created as the blog page.

For the Opt-In form, you can directly input that into your home page when creating your sales letter or place it in your side bar (which then would appear on all pages).

Dana, from what I hear, contact JayXtreme. He's a great guy and he'll be
able to handle any problem you have.

If I'm mistaken, my apologies to Jay for placing him on the wrong pedestal.

Dana, make sure you add a blank index.html page to your wp-content/plugins directory or you are leaving your site open to security threats. http://www.thepressreleasesite.com/wp-content/plugins shows all of your installed plugins vulnerable to hackers.

Milla, I'd never heard of that before. Is that something everyone should do?

I've been using WP blogs for a year and a half now with no problems...

As much as I use wordpress, I have never had this advice before. I must admit, this is probably one of the best tips I have found on this forum in the short time I have been using it.

        Thanks!

Quentin: How do you close down the back end of your file using the htaccess file?

            Eric:
...unless your serving files directly to the public, with no html landing page.
What do you mean by this?

If wordpress is in your root directory, there is no html landing page.

            Also
            ...go to php.ini "EZ config"
How and where does one go to this file?

Sorry for being such a boob, but I would like to learn as much about this as possible.

          Dana,

I think what you are looking for is pretty simple. If you check out one of my sites at TopRankDesign.net, I think that setup is what you are looking for. Check it out and tell me what you think. If that's what you are looking for, PM me and I'll help you out.

By the way, I bought your Twitter Goldrush WSO and I enjoyed it. Thanks!

You should actually close down the back end of your site using the htaccess file if you can and also make sure you are using the latest version which should do this for you anyway..

As for making your wordpress as a cms with static page here is the video.

I agree with Milla. Cover your plugins. It doesn't hurt to check other folders that contain files "for your eyes only", and put a blank index.html file in those, too.

You can and should turn off Apache index in Cpanel.

That would be a more through solution.

Go to bottom of page, Advanced/Index Manager, choose public_html, then choose "no index"

      • Profile picture of the author milla
Yes you are right Eric that is much better solution. But I wonder why indexing is turned on in the first place in cpanel? Does having it on have any benifits, or should it generally always be turned off? Do you know Eric?

I think it should be, unless your serving files directly to the public, with no html landing page.

          Not many people do that.

Just like register_globals should be left off.

If enabled, go to php.ini "EZ config" and midway down set them to off asap.

      Hi Dana

In addition to the help you have had here, Leanne King is a real wordpress queen - I am sure she would have answered you (although you seem to be sorted out now) but she lives in Sidney so probably in bed now!

I also learned a lot of tricks on here - I dont know what the apache index is or what it is used for but I am switching mine off.

      Best wishes

      Rach

Thanks for asking Dana! This is a good post for me to keep coming back to often. I have 2 wordpress sites and although I'm learning a lot, I'm designing a new one that integrates my real estate and internet business and I have questions at times. I've already outsourced some Wordpress developers for a few things that I haven't figured out. Tony Newton here on Warrior Forum is awesome too! He helped me with my Fat Loss Blog new design. Many Kudos to Tony!!!

This is great info. Thanks for this thread, Dana. I have purchased a sale page plug in for wordpress, but am also new at this.

The opt in page is free and can be found at....

I would be willing to pay someone to set up and design my pages. They are already installed...but I need someone who can help me with the creative process, landing page, content for the sales page....and security! (I have an SSL site but had never even heard of the other security needed until I read the info here.
