Ever tryed helping friends and family by trying to get them into Internet Marketing?

I make a decent ammount of loot online. And I'll make more. I know this.

My Mum's really struggling and I have a few friends who ain't doing too well either, and I've tryed to teach them about Internet Marketing but they DON'T BELIEVE IN THEMSELVES! .

I was at my friends flat a few days ago and I had $400 come into my Paypal that day. I showed my friend this and I tryed explaining that people can, do and will make money online.

I told him about selling solutions. I told him about how making a product digitally is really cheap. I told him how he could be making dollar.

Then I was hit with - "Nah I can't do that man"

WHAT? - I convinved him that he could quickly. I know the guy, he has talent, he's just abit down on his luck.

Then he hit me with - "Yeah but what solutions do you sell, I wouldn't know the first thing"

YEAH - That's why you do market research. I told him about how there are people online making money from anything to "weight loss" to "fishing techniques" to "dog training" to "xbox modding".

Then I was hit with - "Yeah but then I'll be in competition with you"

If that was the case, then I am in competition with MILLIONS of people. No worries mate - the internet is close to unlimited!

Then another excuse, then another. I ended up deciding that I'll let him take a look at his life - I told him "look mate, your really struggling, and if you don't try to do something about it then your always going to be in a bad way".

I left him to sleep on that. I hope he comes round and starts trying to sort his stuff out.

Anybody else had similiar experiences with family or friends who just think they should "leave online business to you, and do something else"?

I tried, and wound up doing it all myself until I gave up. If people come to you with a desire to succeed, then and ONLY then are they in a position to succeed.

Nice post, I've ben trying to help some of my mates and family witrh this too but it's just a litle too overwhelming for them I guess.

My mom on the other hand loves to write and is very motivated so I am working with her on how to write SEO optimized articles then I'll introduce her either over here or on elance to see if we can get her some writing work for extra cash. She is stoked so we'll see how it turns out.

    Cheers

Endless cycle with some friends and family members:

"Hey, Man ... can I buy you a cup of coffee and pick your brain about this internet marketing stuff?"

We meet. They give me their story of the job they hate, how they aren't ever going to get ahead working for someone else, how they wish they could do what I do, etc....

I explain how I do what I do.

I explain that they can do the same thing.

They get excited ... "Yeah... I can do that!"

    Months go by .....

    I get a phone call ....

"Hey, Man ... can I buy you a cup of coffee and pick your brain about this internet marketing stuff?"

    Round and round we go.

Total strangers will take action when I teach them but even though I have close friends and family that have WITNESSED how I do this, they won't take action. They still have the same mindset that created the life they have now.

My familly and friends don't believe it's possible to make money online. Too much competition they say. And that's the way I like it. As long as people continue to think this way it means a bigger slice of the pie for me!

So it's not just my friends and family then .

I think it's very true what your saying Tommygadget, unless they come to you with desire they ain't going to be Internet Marketers any time soon.

And Trafficwave: "Total strangers will take action when I teach them but even though I have close friends and family that have WITNESSED how I do this, they won't take action. They still have the same mindset that created the life they have now."

That's exactly how I feel. I just don't understand it either... It's a strange world.

Internet marketing is a vocation. You have to have the drive from the get-go.

My friends watched me take one of my websites from $0 dollars to $30,000 in sales for 2008 just so I could prove to them that you can make money on the internet. They all got excited, and then they all went back to their regular ways of having websites that generate almost nothing.

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it do a double backflip off the high dive.

I have tried but they dont actually want to do any work, I dont know what they think I do all day, well they should since I showed them, but they never apply the knowledge.

So far it has been a waste of time for me to show them anything.

I have some good friends who are very entrepreneurial, have been extremely successful in MLM, and the hubby is currently out of a job. Had a coffee with them, and discovered they have extensive knowledge in a child health issue they've been dealing with for many years, and the wife is a trained medical herbalist.

Bit of keyword searching, found a niche that they could walk all over with no effort on their part, they already have the knowledge. Lots of searches, no competition to speak of, and we found the perfect domain name.

Second coffee, and we bounced around ideas to monetise it. Start with a Wordpress blog, so we walked through the installation, and I'm even hosting it for them for now. Possibly turn it into a membership site, write an ebook.... buzzing with ideas.

I had to go home then, left them all excited and full of ideas. With their skills and knowledge in this niche, they could do so well. Now, two months later, no progress. They've done nothing at all with it.

I don't know what it'd be like with friends and family who don't have the mindset, but based on that experience, I think it'd be a bigger waste of time. My sister is a wonderful craftsperson, very skilled and creative in so many different areas, I offered to whip her up a blog for her birthday to share her skills, maybe some adsense, affiliate sales, her own product... nah, not interested. This is someone who is very financially savvy, has investment properties..

I'm just going to invest my time and energy in myself from now on. If they want it bad enough, they have to walk the walk and not just talk the talk.

When I first started making good money online, I was excited as hell and would tell anyone that wanted to listen.

After wasting hours trying to explain things to them....

I just started saying I was poor and unemployed lol

My friend was as a nutritionist and a private trainer at a local gym and at some point we started talking about what I do... She was very interested and well, she is an expert in a huge, profitable industry.

So she registered a domain name, started a blog (wrote one post with a link to some CB product)... and gave up. After 3 days she calls me and says: " Alex, I didn't make any money and it's been 3 days!"... I got her excited about the whole business but she never put in any more effort... yet every time I see her she complains about how she has no no money and doesn't know how she will pay the rent this month...

I tried to tell and help so many people but until this day nobody really took action, it's really crazy.

Sometimes I think by myself, if i was one of them before I came on internet I would have been really enthousiastic I think, it would have been a great opportunity and would go for it for 100%, that's what I think.

And you know what they all call me??? LUCKY, you have such a good life, you're so lucky, you never work, you only travel. Then I tell them I worked much harder then them when I started, then they laugh and of course do not believe. It's a funny world haha

And the strange thing is, they always complain about their jobs, this is not good that is not good, then I tell them try internet marketing and I can help you out, and then comes the excuses haha

    It's really funny.

So, now I listen and agree with them that it all sucks, what can you do right? lol

Oh, it's so true. My sister is pregnant with her second child, and they're strapped for cash and wondering what to do when she stops tutoring in a few months. Since she's a former teacher of the year, I've tried convincing her to sell her lessons or some kind of guides for parents and she always says she doesn't have time to go through all her materials to do it.

I've even offered to interview her, record it and write things for her and she STILL says it's too much trouble!

      I've almost given up...

My friends and family think internet marketing is a cakewalk because I get to enjoy certain pleasures some of them do not.

I have shown several of them what I do and offered to coach them. The problem is they quickly realize how much work is involved to consistently make money doing this and never take action.

I have since given up on trying to "recruit" friends and family into this business.

I am still searching for a partner with as much drive and passion as me because if you really take a good look around, you need a team to really make it big in internet marketing. Or have really great contacts or jv's to plug into whenever you need help. Trying to do everything by yourself will get you only so far.

For this reason, I have been networking with strangers to find a great partner because friends and family seem to be the worst people to try to teach.

        Just my 2 cents.

You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink I'm afraid!

It's so bad here that the only people I am left to hang out with and talk about this stuff to are my PARENTS!!! Ewww! :-)

I have no friends or family (apart from my parents and my husband, although he isn't all that interested in IM), who are in the least bit interested in what I do and are actually doing it. It's sad really.

I think for the most part, these people hate where they are but they're not hungry enough for what they could have and until they are, they are beyond our help!

I agree with TomG. They have to be ravenous for it. That's how we got here isn't it?

My roommate has a website that gets 100,000 A DAY and he's not selling anything!!!!!! Grrrr...drives me crazy. I have offered to help him get started, and he loves the idea but doesn't make time to actually do the work (or even outsource it.)

It takes a certain drive. i LOVE internet marketing. Find it sooo fascinating, and it constantly sparks creativity and innovation within me.

To each his own. It's okay that it's not for everyone.

I still work a full time job in retail and my co-workers know that I make a nice 2nd income from my marketing online. My niche that I have been focused on is what makes people giggle when I tell them but doesn't bother me one bit because I know when I reach my goal of quitting my job and moving to vegas to work for myself full time this summer they will begin to wonder if they should have taken me seriously. Their loss.

I did have one friend text me today that he bought the domain name for his local restaurant review site. He took the first step and I told him that whatever he needs from me I will be more than happy to help. Gotta help those that help themselves.

You can't force them to do it. They're not you.

In the same way that a ballet dancer won't be able to convince you to dance ballet.

I used to think that anybody could do this, but then I realized the truth.

Most people are too busy making up excuses.

Well, I'm helping one friend right now who is very thankful. He just set up the coolest website that has free podcasts on it. But I have another friend who was on Social Security, but they decided that she should go back to work (she had a psychological disorder, not a physical one). Her husband is very physically disabled and is on Social Security.

Well, I was talking to her about article marketing and her idea is to have her husband write all the articles. I held my tongue, but you can imagine what I was thinking. She is able bodied and not working and her husband is very physically disabled. Yet, she wants to play all day and have her husband write articles to make money. (Keeping in mind that they can't let Social Security know the money is actually his, not hers.) I gave up at that point.

Like Kevin stated, I don't go out and recruit people but if they come to me and ask then I teach them.

I taught my brother and he became successful but I believe there are people who are more suited to be entrepreneurs than others.

When I was a kid we were very poor and some of the guys just hung out and got buzzed, some of the guys were the criminals on the block, others had the paper route getting up early in the morning, and I was the kid who had a push mower and lawn equipment setting my own hours.

So, not to go off on a tangent but you still see those different people here online.

There are the lazy want something for nothing dreamers, the scam artists, the 9 to 5 people, and us the entrepreneurs.

I don't think I can convince someone to be something they are not.
Just like I am not lazy or a thief.

I don't have anything against the 9 to 5 thing if you don't mind being told what to do for twenty years. But I would rather work just as hard or harder as long as I'm the one telling me what to do.

I've showed a couple of people some of my sites and how they make me money. First they're surprised I can even do it and then they ask how I have time for it all to which I answer "I work most nights until midnight and I don't watch TV." They grimace and then move on to talking about the weather. I then know that their 'desperate financial situation' isn't so desperate after all.
