Capturing emails before the payment page

I either don't know how to search this forum, or there is no thread talking about it.

I found many Clickbank sales pages that ask potential buyers to provide their name and emaills before they can go to the payment page.

The thing is, some webmasters are savvier than others, and fill in the name and email address fields on the sales page with the already provided name and email address.

However, I find that there are some that don't do that. You enter your email and name, then you proceed to the payment page and you have to re-enter your email address.

Is this a turn-off? And also, is the whole lead capturing a turn-off? I'm inspecting a product that has an upsell + lead capturing, and only after that I am redirected to the sales page. Isn't the path too long?

      If they are already clicking through to pay then send them to the payment processor. They want to purchase they don't want to sign up to your list. Why put extra steps between them and the product they want to purchase? Do you want them to abandon the cart before they even get to it?

      Now, when the sale is processed and they come to download the product, now you ask for their email address just before they click through to the download page.

    I second the comment above. If a visitor is ready to purchase a product, it's not a good idea to put anything in the way of him and the payment page.

    If you want, you can set your payment processor up to redirect your visitors to your squeezepage after purchasing to download a bonus/receive all future updates free/whatever else.

    Doing this can get you into a bit of TOS trouble depending on the payment processor you're using, so include an option to skip the squeezepage and go directly to the download and you should be cherry.

    You can set up things to capture email addresses of people who purchase through your payment proccesor anyway.

    Atleast I have done it before with ClickBank.

  • most CB guys are doing it because the CB cart / payment page usually only converts at 20%... So getting the email address before sending to the page will allow them to follow up the leads and get them to buy...

    It's worth split testing, we did it in the baby gender niche and our EPC's rocketed.. But you gotta test.

      And unless the opt-in form is set up to capture the affiliate code, and use it in future follow-ups, it's a great way to screw 80% of the affiliate referrals out of their commission.

      And vendors wonder why affiliates don't like offers with opt-in leaks... :rolleyes:

    I still didn't get it.

    Is it a leak now? If yes, why? The opt-in is not on the sales page, nor on the upsell page, it's after those two, right before the payment page.

      It's a potential leak.

      The two circumstances under which it turns into a leak are:-

      (i) The customer fills in that page but doesn't buy, or can't buy, or his order-form submission isn't processed, or whatever (now the vendor has his details and knows he's interested but the affiliate hasn't been paid and may well not be on the subsequent sale) ...

      (ii) After the submission of the opt-in page, the next page the customer gets to is a sandwich page saying, effectively, "Click HERE to pay by ClickBank or HERE to pay by PayPal". Massive payment leak, there. There are vendors who do this, and ClickBank, of course, allows it (why wouldn't they? They'd rather process some of the sales than none, and the vendor would rather have some affiliates unpaid than paid ).

      I'm "just saying" ... :p

      After the payment page, no problem.

      Before the payment page, where your commission is credited to you, still a leak. Especially if the vendor is not recording your affiliate ID and using it in their follow-up sequence. Too many things can happen to either go around or overwrite the cookie to rely solely on that for your commission.

      Even if there are no shenanigans going on, it's still a distraction that can keep the sale from completing. Until the credit card is approved, there is no sale.
