Are You Getting Sidetracked From Your Current Project By "Shiny Objects?"

Warrior forum is great, but there are so many opportunities to make money online. When people share their successes here we want to try them all! Don't you?

My question is, "is that really worth it?"

If you go from one opportunity to the next, like a butterfly, nothing gets done. If we try something and it does not work, we go to the next thing.

Well, how's that served you by far?

My best guess is that you get frustrated and want to kill somebody for the lack of progress you are having :-)

What's the solution?

Stick to one thing, until you get substantial results, THEN go ahead and expand. Most money making opportunities have something in common. You want to find that commonality and apply the principles you are going to learn if you stick to that one opportunity.

If you try something and did not work, stay at it. Find alternative ways, test different things, and simply experiment. Eventually you'll get there.

When you get there, next money making opportunity would be easier, and you can expand your assets pretty quickly. This happens only when you focus on one opportunity at a time - even if it has to take weeks to get it done.

One more thing...

I think, most people are like butterflies on money-making opportunities, because they DO NOT believe in their plan of action. They have doubts, and fears about their outcome. When things do not work, that's why they quit. You need to have unshakable belief in yourself and what you are doing regardless of what negative people are saying or criticism. Stay positive on your goals/outcomes and approach them with confidence!

  • Great post Chris! I know I've faced S.O.S. in the past, and sometimes it can be difficult to overcome if you don't believe in your plan or your abilities. The most successful people in the world didn't achieve their success by diverting their focus over several areas simultaneously... they focused on one opportunity until they reached their maximum potential, and only then did they diverted focus onto building new profit streams and businesses.

  • Yes it's all too easy to put in a little work on something and then get distracted by the new new shiny thing. Apart from the cost there is also the time wasted, and even more importantly the confident in yourself you lose as a result of not focusing on that one thing and sticking to it.

Early one when no results are on the board it seems lots of people get rather desperate to get something/anything to work rather than realising that in many ways this is like starting a brand new career. There is a need for learning and to understand the industry before you can become of enough value to others to be able to reach your goals.

Sticking with it and not get distracted is the key.

    • If there's a money wasted on shiny objects, fine, because you can get your money back. But the time that's wasted during this process, you can't get it back. That's why I find "time" to be our most valuable resource we have today - at least as an idea.
  • Psh, I am not strolling along the Warrior Forum all day reading all the shiny things...

...Okay, so I am. But I am doing really well on not buying everything that catches my eye. I spent the entire month this far only investing in service providers to move forward on my singular path and it has been incredibly refreshing.

    Thanks for posting this!

    • Where is my SOS Sunnglasses....lol

One needs to take action on the object they bought.

I find that turning off all distractions is good. EG skype, email etc etc.

And just concentrating for the time you allocate yourself on actioning the project your on.

  • Yes, dependence on the outcome really screws things up.

Maybe relaxing from time to time would help ?

    • Yes, working too much apparently can cause us lose sight on things. However, if we get caught up in doing something that does not serve our current projects is a distraction.
  • I get sidetracked every single day!
Not so much by a "shiny object" as such, but I will stumble upon another method or technique that really looks interesting and for a brief second I will consider investigating it further.

I try to have the discipline though stick with what I am currently working on, and instead bookmark it as something to come back to when I have some time.

So many things to look at, so little time ....
  • It is very easy to get side tracked, weather it is shiny objects, family, phone calls, or life in general. It helps to treat yourself as a business owner and remember you're taking the shots and you make the call so you are responsible for your actions.
YOu have to focus focus focus

    • Could not agree more - you need to focus. I had a great day today because I eventually "ate the frog" This particular frog was 15 hours of boring but necessary work - it felt great to finally get it done. So yes, focus is key - make your plan and stick to.

  • That's my purpose for 2012 - not being a jack of all trades

That's been one of my mantras - focus and simplicity. Simple can be harder than complex: You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple. But it's worth it in the end because once you get there, you can move mountains ~ Steve Jobs
  • Yeah, I get easily distracted every single day, but other methods as well and just by random stuff on the Internet. Sometimes I feel like I should "ban" some sites from my browser

  • Why do people keep reposting this exact same subject?

It's been said 1000 times before.

Running a business online is the same as dieting - everyone knows what to do (God knows there's enough information and suggestions for different ways).

Dieting = less calories in than out. If you eat a lot then you need to exercise more.

So simple - but lack of action along those simple lines mean that millions of people are obese.

Is it any wonder that they struggle with things that also require knowledge, experience, a plan and then constant focused action?

Everyone knows what the problem is - anyone failing just isn't following a plan - almost any plan works if you use your brain and then follow it.

If you find yourself jumping from one thing to the next all the time - then you just need a business model where that's an advantage and turn it into a benefit.

There's no point trying to get people to be different when they can just ride their horse in the direction it already wants to go.

People always seem to make this stuff way more difficult than it needs to be.
  • Yes agree with you folks... focus on 1-3 key areas as there are skills like email marketing , listbuilding , copywriting which will not hurt to master to a good extent .... and then on one business model until succesful when you can systemize and move on..
  • The best solution I've found is to just make a list of things you want to try when the one thing you're working on at the moment becomes successful. This forces you to work on one thing to the point of success but doesn't make you leave all the "bright shiny things" and never use them. You can just save them for later when you're at a point in your business when you can try them. Of course you only need to pick one thing to try once you're at that point...

  • Hi Chris,

It's very easy to get distracted by bright and new thing that jump into our inbox or special offers so I just delete them straight away and consentrate on what I am working on.

Most people that come into Internet marketing want to make money right away and as you all know that's very hard to do! How many other jobs (and that's what this is) do you know of where you can make pot of money right of without learning the correct process, and making money online is a process that has to be learned.

When I get to the stage where I need additional software or advice that is the time I go looking for it so I am not wasting my time, for time is something you cannot get back.

Learn the art of making money online and the money will come to you, but not until you learn the art!

    • Great post Chris!

It's so important to stay focused, especially when your first learning this business.
      • [ 1 ] Thanks
    • Great points. Nothing comes to us when we just "think about it" or "dream about it" we have to do something to get it :-)

The question is, how bad do you really want it? Learning is good, but taking action is the name of the game.
