Hi everyone, I have been around here for a while as a guest and decided to finally register for an account. Can I quickly say that I am very happy to be here in this great community of like minded individuals and I am super excited to be here. Thanks In Advance for your posts... I would love to hear what you have to say.

My question is this... What is the top 5 Biggest Mistakes that most marketers make in your opinion and if you would have started from the beginning what would you do differently? Thanks for any advice you can give on the matter.

    1. Start with the mindset that it will be easy
    2. Give up when they realize it's not
    3. Jump from method to method without mastering any
    4. Focusing on traffic that will never convert
    5. Never start gathering data (building a list)

You are going to get all kinds of answers based on each persons preferred method, but this is what hits home for me. I wish I would have started building a list 4 years ago when I started, instead of last January. I would have seen the profits earlier, so I would have gotten focused earlier!

I think the 5 biggest mistakes that marketers make are basically the same but what ranged true for me when I started.

      1. Wanting to know and do everything-Lack of system
      2. No organization
      3. Not enough laser focused on a specific thing-This one is kind of tricky because in some cases depending on your knowledge and what you have to work with you can't do one thing without the other.
      4. Building a list
      5. Fully understanding how marketing works-We are all guilty of that one in the beginning.

I'll give 2 only because I think these are the most important.

    1. Lack of planning
    2. Lack of focus
    3. Lack of persistence.

For a large percentage of marketers who are not making it, you can put it down to one or more of these.

They don't plan to fail, but fail to plan and often fail as a result.

They don't realise that lazer focus is required to obtain results and continuall get distracted by the next new shiny thing (product launch) or life in general.

They don't keep at it, particularly when the chips are done. Sometimes just not giving up but continuing no matter what is the only thing missing.

Get these 3 things nailed and it's very likely you are going to be successful.

Seriously, the five big mistakes people make are:

      1. Not knowing their strengths,
      2. Not building a list,
      3. Not making their own product,
      4. Not getting a coach or mentor, and
      5. Not paying any damn attention to what people tell them.

    These are my opinions:

5 Biggest Mistakes that most marketers make:
    1) Overloaded with too much of information
    2) Didn't focus on the methods that can drive traffic to their site
    3) Give up easily
    4) Didn't really understand the whole process, from creating the website till generate the traffic
    5) Don't have the correct mindset

Started from beginning, adopt correct mindset, spend your time EVERYDAY to learn and understand the whole process & procedure, IMPLEMENT it....

    1 - Lack of action
    2 - Lack of planning
    3 - Lack of accountability
4 - Lack of sound business plan
5 - Lack of aspiration to build a long-term business they can be proud of instead of jumping on anything that looks like it might make a quick buck.

    nothing to see here.

Yea, basically lack of a plan and lack of focusing on that plan.
They start off thinking "lets make money online", but they fail to actually treat it like a real business. Just because it's online and not offline they throw planning and focus right out the window, and jump around from one idea to another.

Then they commit the biggest sin of all in my opinion. GIVING UP! I've been there and done it before, but I'm back and doing well this time.
Giving up is the biggest mistake people make in my opinion, because I truly believe that you can only fail at something if you stop trying. Everything else is just a lesson along the way.

    1. Thinking that IM is a "get-rich quick" scheme
    2. Giving up easily
    3. Choosing the NICHE that is NOT right for you
    4. Lack of FOCUS, PATIENCE, AND DETERMINATION
    5. Not willing to learn

Not necessarily in that order but those are my top 5 reasons.

I feel there are quite a few mistakes that IM'ers make especially new ones. People have a perception that the top internet marketers make money in the click of a finger, the reality is they work long long hours and put a lot of effort to be able to make their income more passive until a point where they can work 4 hours a week and generate a tonne of cash. Yet these IM'ers will still work extremely hard on new projects to generate more income.

    1. Not enough persistance
    2. Failing to follow through after the initial hard work
    3. TMI! Too much information - Information Overload
    4. Focusing time and effort on 10 small ideas rather than 1 big one
    5. Choosing niches and keywords that are impossible to do well in

Nice thread - some intersting stuff here.

    My five cents...

    1) Not starting
    2) Thinking that buying stuff is the same thing as working on your business
    3) Not being prepared to invest in the things that matter. Autoresponder, hosting, good info
    4) Not picking and sticking to one model
    5) Not starting

      welcome, its not all that easy. you need a mentor/coach to get you through. Mistakes we make;
      1. Take in too much information
      2. Lose focus along the way
      3. Jump from one method to the next.
Otherwise engaging with like minded people is a good step forward for you. Good luck

What your doing is a good start - learning from others experience. Compile a list of five from those presented here and you'll be better off. Find a mentor to guide you through the maze and mass of information one picks up.

Make another thread and survey this crowd about something like "What mentor helped you the most in Internet Marketing" You'll have to spend some money best to get someone who will get to the meat of the matter. They are out there...

Fear of being unsuccessful. This does not apply only to marketing, but it's what holds most people from succeeding in anything in life, I think. You can't be scared of failing, you have to really believe you are going to make it, otherwise it's not worth the time and effort. Either believe it will happen and it will, or have doubts and fear and you'll fail. I know it's hard to start believing, but you have to.

    My 5 cents:

1- Thinking its too easy and you can make money quick online
    2- Taking less actions
    3- Lack of Focus
4- Not showing Patience, Giving up quick on a method
    5- Not focusing on conversion

I believe many others have also posted similar mistakes, but these are the ones I noticed in my career.

Lack of focus and an ability to take action i.e fear of failure have to be two of the most common mistakes most marketers can make.

Once you overcome those then the rest is not necessarily easy but certainly easier.

One of the the mistake that online marketers do is they fail to market their website offline too. They do not give offline marketing a chance to promote their business.

Traffic is something that is often overlooked by people that are new to marketing. There are hundreds of people selling websites, but very few of the sellers actually divulge that a website needs traffic to make a sale.

Also, failure to realize that 'online traffic methods' are not always the best ways to generate traffic.

-Give up when things get tough

    -Method jumping

-Not focusing on anything. Just think learning everything is the best thing they can do

I believe all of the people have stated the common mistakes, I would add in some of the mistakes that are not really emphasized by internet marketers.

      1. Under estimating the power of online marketing and thus, not much effort was put in.

      2. Influenced by friends saying that internet marketing is a scam and give up when there is really no results after several attempts of trying and months of hard work

      3. You share the idea of making money online with people who are older and experienced than you and since they are not familiar with the internet, they told u not to waste your time and you chose to believe it and move away from this.

      4. Didn't really treat it seriously since the investment capital is low

      5. You believe people who are working for a job, telling you to just get a degree, get a job and stop thinking about making money online cause before u are already making money, the so called "gurus" have earned your money.

Those are the problems I have faced throughout my journey of internet marketing but I am not influenced by them because I believe it works since I have seen many of the success stories!

Mistake 1 not understanding the universal business structure.
    product/platform/customers
this holds true for any business what so ever... undebateable.

1)need product people want and need
2)where will u be selling it from?
3)finding customers to sell it to

The break down is more dynamic than this 3 part diagram looks. So the newbie does not understand these core principles. Failure is sooner than later.

In my opinion the 5 biggest mistakes are:

    1) Trying to get rich quick
    2) Not investing in their IM education - esp. by getting a mentor
    3) Buying too many BS products (Similar to #1)
    4) Not taking action (fail forwards fast)
    5) Not treating this as a proper business

In my opinion there is really only 1 big mistake. Even the biggest Gurus make lots of mistakes, but they are still successful. The one thing they don't do is GIVE UP. They keep trying and trying until they overcome a myriad of mistakes and find something that works.

So the biggest mistake is: Giving up.

    You should do this-

Destiny, strategy, specific outcomes, milestones, tactics- organised in your head and heart in that order.

Instead, it tactics, tactics, tactics; with the occasional wso thrown in to read up on the next quest for the holy grail.

There is no real information overload- just lack of direction and back to front thinking.

To simplify, study the one or two niches you're mad about (or are profitable), ignore everything else until you have worked out how to craft an offer, get traffic, and build and serve your list.

Then you can read every unrelated wso.
