I'm looking into which host to use for my WP sites. Any recommendations?

On WP.org, they highlight the following:

Bluehost: unlimited hosting, 1st free domain, unlimited storage

DreamHost: same as Bluehost, but a little pricier

MediaTemple: seems really pricy compared to the others

Laughing Squid: appears to limit you on space more than the others

Any advice on these four or any others?

Thanks.

I use and would recommend Hostgator. I have been using them for years with multiple Wordpress sites, never had one problem.

I recommend and use Hostgator - they have great support.

When this question was raised in another thread, it was recommended that if you are targeting a country, for example the UK, you would get better ranking if your hosting company is in the UK too. However, no-one is sure how important this really is for rankings.

I recently switched to Hostgator after I had 3 sites hacked within 3 months. Not saying it was the other hosts fault, but at least with Hostgator they monitor for malware and actually clean it up for you, and notify you afterwards. After my previous experience I was very impressed with this to say the least.

I'm also interested to know if anyone has any definitive knowledge about how much it matters if it's better to host in the country you're targeting.

I think this is an old wives tale. Your site content and links are going to have way more to do with anything than where your site is hosted.

I would not worry about this.

I used Hostgator for a lot of time and whenever I had problems they jumped and helped me asap. Really good hosting company that cares about his clients. They are not cheap, but you get what you pay for...

I am using HG for 4 years now but we warned, if your blog is getting 10K+ hits per day then regular account with HG will give you a lot of head ache.

Out of the four you mentioned I know that BlueHost and MediaTemple are reliable. As with everyone else who has posted HostGator is a trusted host for your Wordpress sites too.

Pretty much all of them that have cPanel and / or Fantastico are good for you. Pick whichever suits your needs.

I am more than happy with Hostgator. cPanel and the support is excellent.

Another good one is Hostmonster. Again they have cPanel and good support.

Just the support is easily worth the couple of bucks a month either of these choices might cost over cheaper sites.

The first time you need a question answered in the middle of a project, you will see what I mean.

When I originally looked for hosting, I went with the cheapest well reviewed host I could find. Support was what was lacking.
