Questions on marketing in China? Ask me!

Hey guys/gals,

I'd like to give to this great forum. As I always believe that to get what you want, you must help people get what they want first!

So if anybody here has a GENERAL QUESTION on what the IM market is like here where I am in China, and like to get it STRAIGHT FROM THE HORSES MOUTH so to speak as well as hear it from someone who can CLEARLY explain in english (no offense to my fellow chinese who may read this...), then go ahead and ask me.

Here's some basic rules though as I don't like to disappoint people if the answer is not what they want to hear:

1. Keep it brief (I don't have a lot of time on my hands!)
2. Keep it GENERAL (answering too specific a question TAKES TIME!)
3. Keep it related to IM marketing (I'd love to talk about culture, economics, places to see, etc... BUT it's off-topic!)

For example: Don't expect me to go into detail and tell you how to get on Sina Weibo and how to market to the millions that hit that site everyday. I'll tell you ABOUT Sina Weibo though! ... in brief! Yep, it's bigger than Facebook!

That's it! Fire away!

Oh yeah, I'd appreciate an email addy as I am trying to build an email list to where I'll be able to send tips, tricks and maybe even a newsletter about China IM soon! Send me a PM with your email addy and I may be able to answer your question in a little more detail! It'll be worth your while!

      Hi prian,

Yes, Paypal has a presence in China but people here do not like to use it. Alipay is the predominant form of online payment here. Paypal has two sites in China. One is the standard Paypal site (localized simplified Chinese version available) that you can use to accept payment worldwide and the other is the China version which is only for payments within China. I don't even use Paypal when buying and selling in China! I also use Alipay and offer Alipay as well as some other Chinese internet payment types for payments. Another huge one (though nowhere near as popular as Alipay) is Tencent's called Tenpay.

Hope that helps! Please leave me your email. I'll be giving more detailed info on this and other topics in an upcoming newsletter.

          Hi Shane,

Opening one is easy. Using it is another story. Alipay is accessible worldwide. I am a US citizen and opened my Alipay account using my US passport. Do not need a bank account but to fund your Alipay account is another thing. You will need a china bank account to fund it and there is the extra step needed to authorize the account to be used online. Can be painful. Easy way is if you have someone in China with China bank account who can fund it for you.

But once you open your Alipay account and link a China bank account to it, you can receive payment from selling in China.

      Hi Dave,

Are you referring to outsourcing in China? I assume you are. I pay anywhere from 5rmb to 20rmb for simple work like writing an article. Do the math. The current exchange rate is 6.3:1. So 5rmb is like .80 cents. Beats fiverr, doesn't it? I can get a complete website done for me IN ENGLISH for like 300rmb! Of course, I gotta go back and correct much of the grammar though!

Well you don't mind that as long as they get the code right.

Nope! I completely expected that the grammar would need to be corrected as they do the best they can given limited knowledge of english. I suspect that they use machine translation when possible and in general...they suck! Coding is another issue. There are times I have to correct code as well but hey, as long as the site does what I want it to do!

      Hi savvybizbuilder,

That is too vague a question to be able to answer because it depends a lot on what is it you want done. Professional SEO companies operating in China doing SEO for USA companies charge near US rates.

If you are looking to hire people to do individual things like article writing, researching keywords, posting videos, etc., you can get it done pretty cheap (see previous post on outsourcing) BUT you will need to do a lot of "project management" and hand-holding.
