Guessing Freddie but 20 bucks for a recipe book is excessive.Your visitors are not looking to spend money, they want a recipe and they know they can get one elsewhere.

I can't see that you have analytics running so it would be worth getting that up and running to see where you are getting your traffic and where you are losing them.

Hmm Freddie, I am sorry to say, I think I would be turned off your site.

Is it on a Word Press? No it is landing page yes? The black and wide "Flowery borders" are a complete distraction for me, drove me nuts, kept on seeing it from the corner of my eyes, couldn't wait to leave the site, plus then I read down a little and you are asking me to submit to your list even before you have gained my trust.

I would firstly try to present what you are saying in a better format. A WP Blog, (easy to set up) maybe using a Socrates theme, have your opt-in on the left hand side bar, and give them something for opting in.

Make 1 change at a time, then chart what results you get, then make another change. Changing too many things at once, will only confuse you.

As for PPC, you can go broke, very quickly. Try for some good FREE traffic, I would pause your PPC campaign until you make some changes.

Do not mean to sound mean, but it doesn't look that professional. You have no picture of the book, what am I buying here?

It is all words. People love images.

    I hope I have helped.

Make some changes and then ask for more feedback. You can do this, You are on a huge learning curve. Well done for being brave enough to ask for help.

Suggestions such as these hurt, but they will make you better in the long run. A few people said bad things about my blog, but guess what? I changed a few things and my bounce rate dropped 50 %. Also, I would use different fonts and colors. If making the money right away is not a big issue for you, I would also build a list with a free eBook.

Thanks Maggie, finally someone that just speaks their mind! Have been asking friends a family what they thought for ages, and kept getting "Yeah it looks great, good job" but really what you just said is exactly what I needed to hear. Really I just got to the point where I needed to test it with some real life traffic and track the results, and it has not gone very well so far, thanks for your guidance, I just hope I can make this into a successful site!

You have a high bounce rate because it is a capture page! Bounce rate simply means they don't go anywhere else on your site! This is mainly because there is nowhere else to go! If your capture page is working and your getting sign-ups that is all that matters. The bounce rate doesn't matter for a capture page and will always be high as long as it's doing it's job!

Thanks, the problem is, although there has only been about 100 or so visitors so far there have been no signups to autoresponder and no sales. Not going well. But as CK Bank said I need to listen to what people are telling me, it's hard but I know I need to hear it and take it in and take action. So please hit me with all your suggestions and criticism! Thanks guys!

    Hi Freddie,
'time on site' is possibly more important than 'bounce' on a page like this.
That metric would show whether visitors are actually engaging with your content...

    My suggestions for improvement (with no guarantees) might be;

Use a chinese theme for your border graphics - dragons, bamboo?

Hit the visitor with the benefits first - before launching into the back story of how you found the book i.e.
    • Over 150 recipes!
    • Chinese mealtime etiquette and traditions
    • Extensive Glossary of Chinese cooking terms
    • Discover which wines to serve with Chinese food

Move the opt-in down to near the 'buy button'.

Test various prices till you see which works best.

    Good luck with it...
    Regards,
    Kev

Oh, the site: Chinese Recipe Book - The Ultimate Chinese Recipe Book
Freddie, my first question would be where is your traffic coming from? You should be able to see this in Analytics. Is the traffic targeted?
I've found that bounce rate is directly related to the quality of your traffic.

If you have a website about red rubber balls, and you have people searching for red rubber balls and then landing on your site, they will click around and spend some time on your site. But if your traffic is just browsing and surfing the net for fun, then they might not be interested in your site and will bounce right off it.

So that's the first thing to check.

I want to believe that the traffic you're getting is not highly targeted. Try to limit your keywords to highly targeted ones and you might get conversions.

100% bounce rate means you're getting the wrong visitors

I would definitely get some Analytics so you can see where it's going wrong. Also try out Google Website Optimizer and do some split-testing. This will help you perfect your site and find out what elements are helping/hurting your visits.

You also gotta remember this. Does your $20 eBook offer a better value than a $7 recipe book from Barnes and Noble? Most recipes in these books also have images. Can you beat that?

It's very similar to the sales copy for :: The Secrets of Chinese Cooking and Selected Recipes ::, which is a product which has been marketed for years by a couple of well known UK marketers, did you base your sales copy on this? If so, maybe you should make it a little more original, or part of a bigger site.

Well done on getting something up and running though.

Hey guys, thanks for your constructive criticism (Spelt wrong i'm sure), very helpful. Btw, I do have analytics set up, and the average time on the site is also 0, not good. The traffic is from an adwords campaign, by the looks of things not a very good one. But that's great because I really need to know what is wrong with it, so I can change it, to something that works, hopefully. Thanks to everyone so far, and anyone else with anything to say please say it! I need you to critisize! (Again, spelt wrong i'm sure) :-)

How many visitors have gone on the site? If you've had 5-10 visitors with a 100% bounce rate that is one thing. If you've had 1000 visitors with a 100% bounce rate, that is something completely different!

The design makes me want to leave the page. You need to break up the text with some images. Give them more free content and also the fonts and text needs to be presented in a more easy-on-the-eyes form. As a first time visitor to your site I was turned off by the amount of text that I needed to go through but was not drawn in by any picture or headline.

To be fair, 100 visitors are very few to be drawing conclusions, but ...

It's too expensive, Freddie. This is a niche in which people looking online are looking for free information (of which there's an enormous amount available online).

Please excuse my saying this bluntly, but I think you could adopt all the proposed improvements suggested above (some of which I don't happen to agree with, myself), and still not make a sale, here.

There's also possibly a problem over it being - kind of - a squeeze-page and a sales-page all in one.

I also hate the headline: everyone has seen this "They laughed when ..." so many times, over so many years (decades?) that it has no "pulling charge" any more. Just my opinion.

For myself, I would want to re-write parts of the page, especially the start, use more pictures (and testimonials?) and then split-test (a) a squeeze-page, and (b) a sales page offering the product at $4.95.

Wow, thankyou. Your opinion and experience means alot to me. But you really think that the entire product could just flop? Because if that is the case then I have wasted alot of time and alot of money. - But I will try your suggestions and see what happens, to be honest, I was not really expecting this page to workm I was merely trying to get some real data to use, and so far all of it is bad! Rather demoralizing! Anyway, thankyou very much Alexa Smith, VERY HELPFUL!

Don't forget that (a) I may be wrong (we're all "only guessing, here"), and (b) that even if I'm right, it doesn't necessarily mean that it was all a waste, because there are other ways you can try to use that product (just one of which - selling it a much lower price - we've mentioned).

These things can easily be changed. Sometimes small changes can produce dramatically different results.

If you have strong nerves, show your page to the copywriters in the Copywriting Forum here, with a brief post, and ask if anyone wants to suggest a better headline? You might suddenly have five good headlines to choose from ... just a thought.

Give it a bit longer, anyway. 100 visitors is very little (especially if they're from the same place(s): other traffic may be different?).

You have to change that background if you don't do anything else.. That background messes with the eyes; almost hypnotic..

Also you need to give them something free? Maybe a book showing them how their cooking chinese food wrong. Once they see what they're doing wrong, you direct them to buy your ebookk..

You signup form needs to be visible and attractive... User more colors than white and black. Those are the dullest colors ever.

Your headline should be big and also RED. It should show them the reason they need to be on your page. "Stop cooking chinese food the HARD way" should be at the top. Scrap the chinese cook book at the top...

You need get more images of food and put some happy people cooking and maybe eating chinese food.

Also outline your purchase button. Put it in a box so it is easily recognizable. I suggest changing it to "add to cart" and making it yellow or orange. \

Do you have any testimonials that you can use?

Clean up your bullet points a bit and your free offers need to be put so they can be seen easily.

Go to cbengine.com and find some top affiliate products and study their page and see what their doing. This is how I learned a lot of what I know. Not looking at products as a buyer but as an internet marketer and paying attention to what they were doing that I wasn't.

Now My last question? Have you done research to see if what you're selling is in demand? If so, then you have a goldmine but what's does your book have that they cant find on Google. I'm almost sure I can find out how to cook chinese food using google..

That's where the price comes in.. Are people going to pay $20 for something they can get for free on Google. Highly doubt it but if you set it up where when they leave, a popup comes and they get a 50% discount, then they may be inclined to buy because they think their getting a deal.

You definitely need a popup offer for this though..

Hope this helps my friend.. Wish you the best...

Honestly, wow. Thankyou! You guys have no idea how valuable your input is! I will use this advice very carefully. I think that dropping the price is definatley going to have to be done, maybe pitch it at $10 and then 50% off if they try and leave? Just test it I guess?

      THANKYOU!!!!!!!!

50% off as an exit discount, in my opinion, is a nightmare. It's perhaps more likely to cost money, overall, than to gain anything. In my opinion. Remember that few people buy at their first visit to a sales page.

One thing is more or less for certain, if you have a 50% exit discount: nobody ever comes back and pays the full price!

This is indeed something you can test, but I think you have more fundamental things than this to test first?

Background is a mess I agree with everyone else.

In fact the entire site is not really much to my liking. I'll start with this. The bowl of chinese although I see why you put that there I think you can have something more aesthetically pleasing instead of a plate of food.
Maybe a person putting a plate of chinese food down in a BEAUTIFUL kitchen with HAPPY family members smiling? And I'd change the background to a solid color so the new header stuck out more and triggered people to want to read.

Remember the images you use up top are usually what sells a site the sad fact is 90% of people are just too lazy and need damn good incentive to move forward to read a site. The dish you have up there looks like any other dish I've ever ordered from the chinese restaruant down the road from me.

You need to make people WANT TO COOK chinese and having a picture of chinese food I don't think is going to be enough. For me I usually waste most my time with the header image as thats what is going to make people want to read what comes next. The second I clicked on the site I thought it was a chinese restaruant, then I saw it was an offering for an expensive recipe book, so naturally I lost all my motivation too the second I clicked to your site.

The good news is people are actually responding to your thread.
I posted a thread for a review on my site and noone cares. So at least you have some direction. But the fact is I don't need people to really review my site and either do you. If you really put yourself in the shoes of an outsider you can usually figure out on your own what you're doing wrong.

But it is nice to get feedback just to see whats going on in peoples heads. For me its change the background and get a better header image. Make people WANT to read your site, don't make them hungry. Other they will leave your site and wanna go pick up chinese. If you have a different header, a crazy enticing meal, in an enticing kitchen, with happy smiling folks, I think that would be a much better start.

    Just one mans opinion.
