Warning - Noob Question - Can my viral video earn money

Sure there are ways.

You can have a call to action after the video.
You can get money from youtube ads.
You can make Zazzle/Cafepress merchandise for it!

Sorry man, even if Tosh picks it up there's still no money in it, just the embarrassing fame that goes with it.

To answer your question, if you notice when watching some videos, an advertisement pops up over the video when the bar reaches the little yellow tab. These ads can be placed onto any video. So if you, or your friend, own the video and want to make some money from it. Put up something to market and link an ad from your video to your promotional page.

Other ways to do it is within the description under the video. You would place your link there so people could follow it.

With all of that said, it certainly depends on your video content as to whether people actually are interested in clicking on your ad in the first place. If the video is of a dog spinning in circles chasing it's tail, you wouldn't want to place an ad for acne products there. You would market pet products.

Remember that there are no guarantees with placing an ad on a 'general' funny video, just because you're getting traffic to it doesn't mean they are buyers. Is it worth a shot though, sure. You never know until you try.
