American Idol is Sending Me Traffic...But Is "Celebrity" a Niche?

by Mark Kaye 15 replies
I'm a Top 40 radio Host and every once in awhile I get a pretty nice interview with a big time celebrity that drives a TON of targeted traffic to my website. This past week I got a chance to interview David Archuleta from last season's American Idol. After the interview aired on my show I posted the podcast on my website. Then...

* It was picked up by several David Archuleta Fan Sites around the world
* I started receiving a TON of comments to my inbox that needed approval
* I checked my stats to see that my daily traffic had QUADRUPLED!
* The podcast was played over 1000 times in 36 hours
* I made a grand total of $0.00

I have seen this happen before with interview I've posted on my site (Miley Cyrus, Tim Gunn, and The Guy Who Plays "Ben Linus" on Lost.) I have yet to figure out how-to capitalize on this traffic using IM.

Since I usually just post the interviews in my blog I don't even capture a name. Plus, all of my personal products are more in the IM and Marketing Niche and probably wouldn't appeal to the young girls that are freaking over david Archuleta.

Ringtones maybe?

You can see the interview page that has been getting so much attention here: Interview With David Archuleta from American Idol | Mark Kaye

If you have any thoughts or see something simple that I am totally missing then please let me know!

Thanks!

-MK

    Great interview by the way!

I think you're on the right track with ringtones...you could also have my space stuff (those hideous backgrounds they use), etc. You could also promote music related stuff. Like for example this is a Clickbank product that pays over $60 commission per sale:
Learn to Sing | How to Sing with Singorama

And there other music related products for learning to play the guitar, piano, etc. that have a very nice commission.

I went to your site and there is nothing to buy!!!
Right under your podcast should be some affiliate products - like his cd's or posters of him or something. Hook up with Commission Junction or someone like.
Actually I'd go a step farther and every time you do an interview, ask the guest, their promoter, agent, etc. what products they have available and JV with them or at the very least affiliate with them. Even if it means you have to "stock" some of the product so its available when your interview airs. There are lots of things you can do.

Good grief... I couldn't find anything on your site to spend my money on!

    Mark,

Look for a CPA offer for a magazine such as People, US Weekly or National Enquirer(or a related publication) that focuses on celebrity gossip and news. That's probably your best bet for getting something that converts.

Mark you're a good writer (especially headlines) so why not write a short ebook on "How To Meet Celebrities Even Though You're a Big Fat Nobody" or something like that.:-)

...make it an 'impulse ebook' (under $10) and put a link on your site near the celebrity interviews. You can still have Adsense, affiliate links and other stuff there, but who knows, if your book sells, you could write even more about niche celebrity topics. .....

"How to Get a Job Working for a Celebrity"
"How to Become a Paparazzi in 48 Hours"
"How to Marry a Rich and Famous Person"
"How To Look like Your Favorite Celebrity"

    etc....just some thoughts.

I won't claim to know anything about being a radio host, but isn't your site more about personal branding with the goal of furthering your prospects as talent? Wouldn't CPA or affiliate offers run the risk of affecting that image when a talent scout comes to your site?

This a great point and something that I have struggled with in the past. except that when you visit OTHER prominent host pages including Ryan Seacrest, John Tesh, Rick Dees, Rush Limbaugh, etc. You will see that they are loaded with products of their own creation AND someone elses....And as a radio host clients and potential employees want to know that I understand how to sell...

I think there is a way to brand myself and promote products...at least I hope there is!

Which is why I suggested products related to the person being interviewed.

Personally I think you are missing the boat if you don't have promotions for products related to your guest immediately under your interview. Its white blank space - use it. It can be done tastefully.

If I'm David's agent and you wanted to interview him and I knew his products would be advertised there -I'd view that as a win win situation. They are agreeing to be interviewed to sell THEIR brand and that means their product.

You need to add product that is relevant to your guest and on that page only.

While you are selling yourself as a host also sell the medium that people will visit (your website)

This is great stuff. I guess I really am missing the boat on a ton of things...I love these ideas.

And thanks to everyone else. I will check out posters and other CPA's too!

    Mark,

I love that a top40 host (didn't they used to call you DJs) is trying to make money online. Shouldn't you be like the other hosts and try to get some syndication deal or something

I love it cause I used to own radio. I don't think most people know how much work goes into radio, but glad to see you among the 'people'

I think others mentioned similar, but you should be able to do the following easily:

Make a chart or something with the demographics of your audience (if you are a rated market, this is done for you), spend time finding every affiliate program and finding products that cater to the diffferent demographics.

cj.com, clickbank, linkshare, ebay, amazon, etc

Create blocks of code for each of these affiliate items whatever they are.

Add both your book (Radio interviews) and at least 1-3 appropriate affiliate code blocks and maybe adsense? to each of your interview page posts.

At least that is a start.

By the way, do you have full control over what you produce on air, or co-ownership? You may be able to collect a bunch of interviews and charge for download, cd, or transcripts... as a group.

CPA Offers (banners) Galore via Cyber Bounty CJ etc. Very easy to paste the code into your page Mark and get money. After you apply, it will take a few days to get accepted. Also, use CPA popups on arrival/exit and you should get major income very quickly.

Amazon, iTunes, and ringtones spring to mind first. You could be selling music and concert videos from them, if nothing else.
