Buying links from competitors?

Just to this message:

"I am the webmaster for www.kl***nds.com. *** Brands makes car cleaning products used by rental car agencies such as Avis and car cleaning businesses.

I was curious to know if you would be interested in letting us pay you for a small banner ad on your website. We'd like to advertise on your site since our products are mostly used by car cleaning professionals. In fact, we offer wholesale prices for detailing shops, car dealerships, and agencies.

Now, I don't have just a huge budget to work with, but did want to reach out to you to see if you are interested and if we can agree to a fair price.

I you're interested, feel free to email or call me at my number below.

Thank you for your time and consideration."

This is not truely a direct competitor, but we're in the same industry (automotive parts).

If I agreed, he'd get an ad on a thematically relevant PR3 site.

Anybody use this tactic? Effective?

  • If you need the money and it's a reputable site, I'd say go for it! As long as it won't hurt you in the long run.
  • No I won't sell him a link. I'm asking if the kind of begging he's doing would work for ME?
  • Yeah, sure this is effective if you have a good budget and the time to do it.

This guys is probably part of an SEO company charging good money to do this.

If your rewards are worth the effort then go ahead and get stuck in. This DOES work, you just have to be tenacious and have a good budget
  • I would not sell a link to a direct competitor:

    a. Frowned upon by Google
    b. You are helping a direct competitor not only take actual visitors away from your site, you are also helping his long term SEO.
  • As long as it is not the website of a direct competitor there is nothing wrong with it.
