Examples of Niche and Authoritative Sites

Hi there,

Interested in starting a site. Not sure whether I want to do an authoritative site as you guys call it or niche. Would like to see a few examples of each and maybe the difference between them so that I can figure out my strategy in what I am looking to start.

    Niche sites are typically one or two page sites on a specific topic. The idea is to drive targeted traffic and then monetise that traffic with an offer or adsense or some type of incentive. Authority sites have many more pages take more time and are considered an "authority" in the eyes of google on a particular subject. You might find that warriors here could be hesitant to show you their niche sites because of copycats.

    The size of your site may well be governed by the size of the niche you choose and your continued interest in adding content.

    Your site doesn't necessarily need to have a lot of pages to be an Authority site though, it just needs to be THE site, that everyone goes to for whatever they need to know about a topic.

    The advantage of a huge site is that you can collectively target hundreds of thousands of keywords.

    A prime example of what is seen by G as an Authority site is acne.org.

    not that much content, but Dan ranks for an awful lot of keywords throughout the acne niche, the visitor traffic is huge because it is a community site.

    The site in my signature while not being the "top" authority for my niche(because of panda) and its age, and a single competitor, but it is an authority, and it does take a lot of work. Authority sites are good because they give your audience a reason to visit them and a reason to come back(fresh content). They're bad because of the extra effort needed. Typical niche sites are one shot one big, you're always striving for new users to get your sale or whatever because you can't expect them to keep coming back, due to lack of fresh content. Again it depends on your setup, but these are extremely valuable too, take Justin, he has over 100 sites, mostly Niche, and he does well on some he hasn't touched in years.

    A niche is a market segment that you can serve uniquely.

    An authority site is one that's the 'go to' resource on the topic.

    You could combine the two and have niche authority sites, which
    will be as big (or small) as the niche you zero in on.

    Concepts behind building an 'authority site' are the same regardless
    of how big or small the niche - you must position yourself as THE
    place to go for authoritative content on the subject.

    Examples from the roofing niche:

    Large authority sites:

    Corporate: GAF | America's #1-Selling Roofing Materials & Certified Roofers

    Personal: Home Improvement, Home Remodeling, Home Repair - Bob Vila

    Niche sites:

    Roofing Calculator - Estimate Roofing Materials Cost & Roof Installation Prices.
    Roofing Shingles Price
