If you already have Microsoft office you might have publisher which already has poster templates.

2010 offers a free 30 or 60 (can't remember) day fully functional trial so you could use that if you can't use 2003 I think you can do everything with 2010 that you can with 2007.

          Cool.

Is there a function tat allows you to create a relatively simple flyer on 2010?

GIMP is the freeware alternative to photoshop, and it pretty mich gives you mostly the same capabilities and pretty much the same learning curve. There are other alternatives, of course, but this is one of the most well known.

I think someone else said this already, but I can't recommend Open Office enough. Once you figure it out it's very easy and the best part is of course that it's free.

Inkscape is pretty good, especially if you need vector images (ie you can resize the final image to any size without losing quality).

      Inkscape. Draw Freely.

Get fireworks by Adobe, it is for web design but it creates images pretty well and then you have something to create web creatives as well.

I tried Gimp but just became so frustrated with it, in the end I just went back to trusty old PS.

Here's a page of free downloads from Serif, haven't tried all of them but they look fairly promising... http://www.serif.com/FreeDownloads

Also there is Editor by Pixlr... Photo editor online / free image editing direct in your browser - Pixlr.com its a browser based thingy but fairly good for basic stuff.

Good luck with whatever you go with.

EDIT: Sean, just saw you're from Cork, I used to live in Macroom up until a couple of years ago... Escaped to Bulgaria cos of the feckin' Irish weather

This might sound out of the ordinary, but I use wix website creator to make all my ad pages.

Sign up free. Use a template of choice or do what I do and start from scratch.

All the text, shadowing, image posting, effects are the easiest and make a nice ad once its done. You can do so much. I would love it if it was just a software alone.

Once done make sure to widen your layout so you can cut off the wix logo on the side. Then do print screen and past it on paint and crop your image, then save as jpeg.

    Hope this helps.

I've bought a software package in Walmart store helping design marketing materials and it was good, not sure of the name. You can find one easily locally. The DVD package is sometimes easier than digital downloads...

Hey Sean, go to Easy Flyer Creator website(you can Google it ) for a trial program (Its not free program but it worths looking at) that does event flyers, brochures, and business flyers. It comes loaded with samples you can use or you can use your own art. Easy Flyer Creator even lets you add bar codes and MS Tags. And the best feature I like is the mail merge documents.
