I didn't get into business for this!

Oh man.....I.M. is so unstable and frustrating I think I need to give up to save my sanity.

I wake up every day wondering what new curve ball G, Ebay,Amazon, cpa etc is going to throw at me. Are my accounts safe, will I get paid this month etc. I even have nightmares about losing accounts etc.

So I wake up this morning I have lost my Amazon affiliate accounts. 5 sites I have built over the past 9 mnths all gone because of "cloaking links"

I have lost AS acounts in the past ...I was never even told why.

Same with ebay.

Al lthis link building, building rank "manipulation on G....I feel like it's a losing game. Chasing my tail day after day grinding out to some "monoplies" ploicies. When they slap, and change we simply have to dust our-selves off and reboot.

But this isn't what I got into this for. Inbetween al the scammers, bull sh*** and big brother companies pushing us all over the place....I have no enjoyment left in this industry.

I can't seem to gain any traction. I built successdful Ebay businesses....only to be elft with nothing with policy changes. I tried woith othe rmethods..had good success for a while and them "wham" something always comes along to change the game.

Thx for listening to my rant....I may even cancel my Int connection and be done with it once and for all.

Sick, tired, p*** off and burnt out form it all.

    Totally hear you on that!!

Back in 2004, I had over a thousand sites that were delivering big bucks to me before Google killed 'em all.

Still have 700 sites, but hey, that's another story.

Anywhos! If you are dependent upon Google or Amazon or eBay or what have you...you're at their mercy.

    Stop.

Focus on what you CAN control...

      your response to these challenges.

      Also, re-evaluate your strategy.

Build your business mainly around things that you CAN
control rather than being dependent upon the policies
      of third-parties.

It reminds me of the quote by Earl Shoaff:

"Don't wish it was easier; wish you were better.
Don't wish for less problems; wish for more skills"

Rather than becoming despondent at the situation,
realize that these problems are gifts in disguise.

After all if it were easy, then everybody would be able
to do it and push through the tiny obstacles and get a
      share of the pie.

Instead, the rewards are reserved for the toughest and
most determined people in the field.

Amazingly I did this but that kind of died off as well. So I went into other things and wish I had not bothered.

I was using Adwords/SEo for my marketing back in 2003-2005 then all of sudden G decided my site wasn't good enough banend from adwords etc. (about 300 original pages on real content) so that died off.

It just seems one huge problem after another.

    Thx.

      I totally hear you, sloanjim.

Endless challenges are part of the game of business. Don't let it kill you - or your business. Stuff happens all the time and it's not just in the online business world.

A friend of mine owned a busy restaurant downtown. One day he received a registered letter informing him that the building had been sold and his 20-year lease terminated. The building was demolished a few months later and took down several businesses with it.

Best thing to do is to take a break. Get away from your computer for a couple days. Refresh and regroup. Don't let a couple of swings knock you out of the game. There will always be problems and obstacles in any business. But the rewards are worth all those challenging times.

If you want a stable income. Build a list.

That is repeated on here daily. Although a list is not stable for a life-time. Usually they go in 2 year cycles. So every two years, you need to build a new list. Or rotate if you will.

But learn how to build a huge list and you are set for life.

I completely resonate with you on this.

I went through the same sort of thing a couple of years ago, whereby everything I tried worked well for a while but every time I tried to upscale and automate something would change and screw it all up!

It sounds you need to focus more on building leverage and getting your traffic from multiple different sources.

      Thats what I told you.

But even in real world, with real clients, with real products on sale, you have the exact same issues - in a different form, but they're the same.

I remembers this ol timers story, a worn out frustrated man comes into the bar, and say's "thats it" to a guy sitting quietly alone, I quit, I have been digging that hole for years looking for that gold and every time i would dig it out some more, the sides would fall in or it would rain and i would need to start over, I have had enough, even going to sell my shovel.

So the guy at the bar bought the shovel at a cheap price and dug down in the hole 3 inches only to find the biggest golden nugget anyone had ever seen, as for the old digger, well he gave up just before sticking gold.

find your passion then dig in.

Partly true but not entirely. Off-line we have to deal with suppliers who let you down, cash-flow, greedy landlords and all the usual stuff.

You've made money so you have the skills, you just need to reorganize so your business life fits in with your personal goals. I always compare IM to gambling, if that roller-coaster lifestyle doesn't suit you then re-tool so that it does.

Find a product you believe in. Build your own if you have the skills, or find a reputable supplier who'll drop-ship private label. Then get yourself a good merchant account provider. Diversify your marketing so you're not beholden to any one source.
You'd be amazed how quickly things can settle down for you.

Guess you need to open a REAL offline business to understand how wrong you are. You'll see many similarities between these 2 worlds and how "big" (insert name here) can flip your business upside down every other week, changing policies, deadlines, costs, delivery methods, etc etc etc.

      Just sayin.

OP, as I told you before, if you can't take this online mess as a natural part of doing business online, then most probably you're not fit for this. But hey, Thats not a bad thing, to be honest! Maybe you're wasting time and money when you could be making a fortune following your own path in another core business.

Who knows? What do you enjoy or love to have a business?

AS many have already said .. control every aspect of your business that you can control.

A list is pretty much a must.

Nothing wrong with using Google and other third parties .. just never let them be your main source for anything.

If you are going to use third parties .. you are going to need to follow their tos .. cloaking is a no no on Amazon .. if they were making you money .. why did you cross the line?

I don't like a lot of the rules individual sites have but I follow them if I want to stay in their sand box.

I hear you sloanjim, this business can give you some hard knocks, and it's not just Google and "big business" that can take you down. I had a site penalized in Google after a competitor pointed tens of thousands of porn links to it. Went from position 3 for an ultra competitive keyword to not being in the top-1000. It took 2,5 years and a domain change to break back in the top-10. Believe it or not but at #3 that site was making just over $100k per month, so trust me when I say know how it hurts!

One piece of advice I would give you is to build up a chunky "rainy day fund", because in this business there will be days when its poring down! I suggest that you try to have a nest egg of at least 18 months expenses tucked away. I mean that nothing in your life should have to change for 18 months. You should have enough for holidays and all the extras you are used to for at least 1,5 years. Why 18 months? Because I know that as long as I have my health and at least 12 months I know that I can come back even if I were to lose everything financially.

Another thing I believe is important is to stop up and truly appreciate everything that you DO have in your life at the moment. That may sound corny but I have to force myself to do this. If I don't, I just end up taking everything good that happens for granted and everything bad that happens comes as a complete surprise!

Ouch! It sounds like we can finally end the debate about whether or not you can legitimately penalize another person's site...It looks like you can with *drum roll* porn links!!!

        What a good time!

But on a more serious note, yes Internet marketing certainly can have a pretty steep learning curve, and even once you've learned everything you can still get knocked flat on your behind out of nowhere sometimes. It's happened to me, and I suspect a lot of people here.

But hey, life was never made to be under our control, so I guess that's just something we all have to live with.

I don't want to derail this discussion but think I should probably explain what I said above a little further. First though, I can say without a shadow of a doubt and from painful experiences, that yes, you can take down someone else's site in Google with enough bad links. However, the more authoritative it is the harder it is. In fact, you can even do this by pointing enough "good" links to someone's site.

Anyone who believes Matt Cutts when he says: "What others do to your site can't hurt you." has either never met him, or is just plain naive IMO.

In my example above it was actually partly my own fault that this happened though.

I didn't have my server correctly set-up (just like millions of other websites), so when someone entered a non-existent/made up URL on my domain the server showed that URL but with the content from my index page. This is a really bad idea even if no one is trying to harm you since Google is likely to index loads of pages that don't even exist as being duplicate content of your index page. In my case it was made even worse by the fact that the links were pointing to non-existent URLs that my competitor had made up, with some horrible pornographic words in them. So Googlebot figured that I had loads of these horrible file names with words that was triggering the safe search filter, and those pages were all duplicates of my index page....expensive lesson learned!

I have learned something else as well though, and that was what got me through that bad time. Karma is a bitch for those who intentionally hurt others.

This is exactly why I've learned, as you have now, that you should NEVER send traffic directly to someone elses sites.

Changes in any business are all part of the game so you have to do your best to be set up to mitigate any affect they can have on your income.

Some ways to do that is have your own sites and to build lists.

That list is yours so whatever happens you can then re-direct the offers to your list from somewhere else.

You say you tried it, but what I've found is that if you make list building the priorty instead of a sideline to making sales, you end doing both, getting a list and then making sales.
