WHAT IS YOUR VIEW ON SOCIAL BOOKMARKING?

What is your view on social bookmarking?
Im currently using socialmarker.com to build links to my website and to help me gain a first page ranking on google.
It is taking me ages to do this just for one page and I am wanted to do this for evey post on my website but at this rate it is going to take me forever because im having to sign up to every single application.
Is it worth all this time? Is there a quicker and more effective way without spending any money?

    SEnuke does this very quickly.

Personally, I wouldn't waste my time bookmarking each and every post. You'll get far better returns on time invested, and enjoy a better reputation in the social bookmarking site's community if you only bookmark your very best posts.

I've been doing Bookmarking as a paid service for others and I can tell you it's a real PITA. The good news is once you sign up for all those sites it gets a lot easier.

You have to consider whether you have enough VRE to make it worth the time to sign up for all those sites, and then whether or not you are committed enough to your properties to go through the process. I spent the better part of two days investigating and signing up for over 150 bookmarking sites, and it's no picnic. I would have never done it if I wasn't going to offer the service.

Perhaps just the top 10 or twelve would be enough if you only have one or two sites to bookmark. You can set up to do them manually almost as fast as the socialbookmarker sites.

Links are always good, but if you're pressed for time, the top dozen PR7 and Pr8 will really help. The traffic sucks, but the links will get you good rankings.

It takes time to do... Some sites are also useless as they stay down more than anything. I have accounts at approx 200 different bookmarking sites and I do bookmarking. Do I bookmark all my pages ? No.. But I do ping my bookmark profile and randomly submit my profile to over 50+ RSS feeds.

What you need to realize is bookmarking is not a instant traffic getter... It is a slow process and used as backlinks. You also need to take the time and be involved in the community on those bookmarking sites that have community functions.

Everyone's opinion on that will differ, but here are some of the top sites by PR Rank that are not news or video specific:

Digg, Mixx, Propeller, Technorati, Connotea, Folkd, Furl, Google Bookmarks, Mr. Wong, Multiply, YahooMyWeb, Backflip...

I've had good results with social bookmarking but I've been building it up over two years. Trying to cover all the bases will wear you out. Now I only post my best stuff to a handful of sites and I mix them up. I think it looks more natural that way and less spammy to each site than flooding them with everything you do.

If you want some fast progress you can use a service like submitedge.com. I haven't used them for a while but the last time I checked you could get 125 manual submissions for $35. I've done several times when I think I have something noteworthy.

Yep the problem is that people on social bookmarking websites tend to be more "techy" and know how to get all the information they need for free. IMO the best way to "monetize" social bookmarking traffic is to use it for linkbait.

That's true. But not just for linkbait, I know a guy who makes hundreds of dollars in Amazon commissions whenever he gets a digg frontpage. And another one who gets a big increase in people subscribing to his list when he gets a frontpage. Opt-in is right at the bottom of his bait post.

There's social bookmarking for links (submitting to 50 odd sites at once and then moving on) and there's smart social bookmarking for traffic, links and money.

Social Bookmarking is better for helping your search engine rankings than it is for anything else. Just like SexySarah19 said, "It doesn't convert well", but it definitely can help your search engine rankings. Especially Digg, StumbleUpon, and Squidoo (not exactly social bookmarking, but can be more helpful than just a Social Bookmarking site Like Digg, etc...).

    Hope this helps

    Hey,

Here's my 2 cents worth. While social bookmarking is a good way to drive traffic to our site, I would still urge everyone of us to look at the basics - why social bookmarking sites exist?

The answer is simple - to encourage interaction between internet users so they can share great or interesting posts with other users. As such, it's important not to flood your social bookmarking account with bookmarks to all your site.

So remember to add a little bit of human-ness to your account by logging in and bookmarking someone else's post you really like. This way, the bookmarking site wouldn't close down your account (some sites wrote in their terms of use that they are tracking accounts that bookmarks the user's own sites. don't know how they do that but I wouldn't risk it).

      Dominic,

Great post... I agree completely. The people that tend to do really well with social media in general are the people that are regular users on the site.

Consider WF - If I just came here and posted a single thread or even WSO and then walked away... not much would happen. But, if you are a regular contributor and comment on the site, people get to know you and they see your comments... you make friends and links... and then your posts and things will see more traffic (you will also learn what works and what doesn't for that site).

All of the Web 2.0 social media sites are based on SOCIAL interactions... comments, diggs, friends, ratings, etc... So I think its important for people that want to utelize social media to be active in those areas.

If all you want is just the links, then you'd be better off using a paid service...

Great suggestions so far but I would say that some of the best one's I have used for purely page rank are: Digg, Backflip, Mixx, Multiply, Connotea, Propeller, Furl, Technorati, Folkd, Google Bookmarks, and Mr. Wong. Social bookmarking is more of a slow build to success, so it doesn't necessarily generate traffic straight away, but is builds up your page rank over about month or two! Hope this helps!

social bookmarking from my experience can help you get indexed very quickly by google.

it can also give you a reference to your website prominately at the top of google too but its only temporary...

i usually always use it at the start of any SEO campaign to get me kick-started

and you may just get some good conversions if your bookmarkng quality stuff

I have found social bookmarking to be helpful, but like others are saying, it certainly isn't going to take care of business on its own.

Its just a piece of the puzzle. This particular piece is free to do, so that makes it a hit with the newbie crowd. Just make sure you don't pull all your eggs in this basket!

We use social bookmarking as an added boost to building backlinks to our websites and our clients' websites.

For less competitive keywords and niches, it does help the website to rank fairly well. But you will definitely need other forms of backlinking methods to get your website ranked.

We like using Big Mike's Socialbot and Brian Edwin's Bookmarking Demon. Speeds up the bookmarking process a fair bit.

Whilst many talk abt bookmarking more as a way to create social buzz, that's right and fair enough. But then your planning of the bookmarks and tags/descriptions would have to be slanted in a more "sexy" manner. Personally we don't use bookmarks this way (though the rewards can be huge) as the ROI from such campaigns can be nil too.

    Just my 2 cents.

I keep reading that social bookmarking takes time to see returns on your time investment as well as it's good for a quick surge in traffic. Which one is more accurate or are both true?

        Patrick,
Both are true really... This depends upon how you are doing your bookmarking. As I have posted before hiring someone to use their accounts to bookmark your sites are far more effectivethen just you bookmarking your accounts.

Bookmarks can help with traffic and page ranking both when it is done the proper way.

Hi guys, excellent thread. I've always used onlywire in the past, which is great value. But to get any kind of quality out of links you have to use proxies when creating accounts so the account sign ups don't come from the same ip address and it's a bit of a pain.

I've had enough of the manual submissions so I've been doing some research today and just found the following bookmarking services. I'm going to try them out now so i'll let you know how I get on. The top one is also a Warrior so i'm going to try him first:

If you find a bookmarking 'system' that works for your business model, then you've struck gold.

    1.) Do it yourself first
2.) If you have success, then see if you can duplicate it on another site
3.) Once your 'system' works on multiple sites (meaning it's a proven system), then document the steps and outsource

By creating a proven system, you should know... if I do 'A' then I get 'B' results. 'B' could be # of subscribers, # of buyers, a $ amount, etc.

So if you know by doing steps 1-5 you can generate $50. Then outsource steps 1-5 for $10 (or whatever - less than $50).

The HUGE benefit to coming up with your own system first - even though it might totally Suck to do it manually - is that it's YOUR system (not one that someone else has sold to 1,000 other people).

Find a solution that works for you and your business model and then just crush the heck out of it.

I know you don't want to spend any money, but I think that is the way to go. The way I look at is that if you have to spend $50 to make $100 then it is money well spent. You can then use that one hundred and purchase two so you would end up with $200.

Agreed! You really need more than one strategy. There are all types of Social Media Marketing Sites.

Social Bookmarking is just one type with a particular set of characteristics.
Social Networking, Social News, Video Sharing, Content Sharing, etc... All have their pluses and minuses.

I use some for backlinks and support to bolster the authority of others. I use some because the user interaction is great and involvement in certain communities offer a lot of traction you can't get by just dropping links and moving on...

Agree with what previous posters have said when they say it takes time to do. Some bookmarking sites are not very effective as there system may be down more than just occasionally, so I made an effort to initially sign up with about 150 different bookmarking sites and I do my bookmarking that way. I don't typically bookmark all my pages, but I like pinging my bookmark profile and then submit my profile to over at least 40 RSS feeds. It isn't an instant source of traffic but when you take the time and get involved in the community on those bookmarking sites it can be extremely beneficial. My 2 cents worth!

      Hi Laurian,

There is problem with Social Bookmarking now a days i.e. Social bookmarking can also be susceptible to corruption and collusion. Due to its popularity, some users have started considering it as a tool to use along with SEO to make their website more visible. The more often a web page is submitted and tagged, the better chance it has of being found.Spammers have started bookmarking the same web page multiple times and/or tagging each page of their web site using a lot of popular tags, obliging developers to constantly adjust their security system to overcome abuses.

For Link Building I recommend you to visit Link building forum. There are bunch of experienced people out there who can solve your queries as well as suggest you the right way.

In fact,I got most of the answers over there related to link building.

Social bookmarking is more becoming a spamming tool than a real social proof tool.

More than 90% of bookmarks on the bookmarking sites are the bookmarks of the owners of those pages.

We too spam those sites by bookmarking our own links, don't we? Our pages are supposed to be bookmarked by other people. Not by ourselves.

The absence of any control - review mechanism on those bookmarking sites will make them full of spam in a near future and their benefits will be nulled by google by a small algorithm change.

The destiny of social bookmarking sites will not be any different than those FFA link farms 5 years ago... IMHO

The absence of any control - review mechanism on those bookmarking sites will make them full of spam in a near future and their benefits will be nulled by google by a small algorithm change.

The destiny of social bookmarking sites will not be any different than those FFA link farms 5 years ago... IMHO
"FFA Link Pages" never was any good from day one and have been played out for over 8 years...

Bookmarking is more powerful when done by another person using another account on the same site, yes this is 100% correct.. Why some like me offer this service..

Looking for someplace to boost your post count ?? I see no use in your post at all.... Instead of looking to post just to post for a post count why not offer helpful insight on the subject matter at hand ... ??

Eh what about social bookmarking sites that are nofollow? Isn't stumble upon a nofollow? Would you submit to a bunch of no follow bookmarking sites? Yes, no, maybe?
