What's the Deal With the WF? Timeouts and I Can't Do PM's?

by Ouroboros 10 replies
I know there was a thread a few days ago about the forum being slow, but I wasn't really having a problem then...

The last three days I've been getting network timeout again and again, I can barely use the forum. Usually, I can clean up my PM's and it speeds up when I get them under 80-100, but I've deleted a crapload and still no help?

Is anyone else having this problem? Thankfully, I don't have any WSO's or anything critical going on, but I've been pretty much shut out for the last three days.

Hmm..I haven't heard anyone else having a problem like this. All server stats show everything fine.

Is it only on here you are having this problem?

    Hi Allen

It was really bad a few days ago, but everything seems ok now (from my end anyway)

      Hi Steve,

Seems like a browser problem. I just logged into your account and everything was fast, just like in mine. No problems.

Have you tried a different browser just to see what happens?

I hate to say it but the same thing is still happening on my end too. Never had any issues until just the past handful of days. About every other thread I click on is timing out, and I have to refresh 2-3+ times before it actually connects to the thread.

I just tested it using the latest version of Firefox and IE - same results with both browsers. Been on several other websites throughout the day today and last few days and they are all working fine - It's just the WF that's timing out. Also just backed-up and emptied all my PM's, and then ran CCleaner.

Still no love from the WF.

I'm a patient man so it's really not that big a deal - I just wanted to give a heads up.

BTW- BIG thanks to Allen and crew for all you do here! I'm sure it's quite a job keeping the server/s maintained to handle this many people.

I did notice the problems over the past few days.

Today I've been checking the form for most of the day and have posted a few times.

I happy to report that I've not noticed any problems today at all. Not even one.

Maybe those that are having problems have something different about their account - maybe zillions of PMs or some such. I don't know - just an educated guess.

          Cheers,

          Neil

I had this Friday and a big chunk of Saturday. Rebooted, and it cleared up.

May not be the same problem, but it's worth trying.

    It's fast for me.

The time-out problem you're describing sounds like it could be your ISP's DNS. You can go to OpenDNS.com and use their Domain Name Servers free. You'll find simple instructions there on what you need to do. It takes less than 30 seconds to switch them. Give it a shot - you can always easily switch back to your ISP's if you see no improvement.

    I'll bet that's your trouble.

      Hey John,

I just tried OpenDNS and it made everything waaaay slower. Then I switched back to my default DNS and everything appears to work perfect now! No more time-outs here at the WF.

When I switched the DNS back I noticed that it automatically restarted my router, so I'm guessing maybe that's what caused the improvement. Really strange though, because before the improvement the WF was the only site that was timing out. Go figure.

Anyways, everything appears to be back on track now.

That's interesting. Maybe Steve can try this also and fix his problem.

Would really like to find out what the cause of that is though.
