Selling Advertising Directly

I want to start selling advertising on my niche sites. Sometimes AdSense isn't earning enough and direct ad sales could be making you more money. I found one great resource about it at SmartPassiveIncome.com:

Niche Site Private Advertisement Experiment – Part 1 – Why? | The Smart Passive Income Blog

Niche Site Private Advertisement Experiment

Anyone has experience they could share about selling ads?

Cheers

I sell ad space in a network of sites I own in a very specific niche. I worked in the niche industry for years and I know a lot of the people. The main site in the network is 10+ years old and considered an authority site in the industry.

I don't put Google Adsense or affiliate ads on these websites. The only advertising is from direct ads.

Well, share some insight man! You're doing well. How you determine price? You charge monthly fee or do CPM?

I'm thinking that I could have a nice $50 a month for a site in a small niche with 1000+ visits a month that ranks in Top3 of Google. Does that work in your experience?

I charge monthly. What you can charge depends on your traffic and the perceived value of the site. My largest site has forums and a calendar and only advertisers who have purchased 12 months of advertising are allowed to post about their product in the forums or post events on the calendar. They also get a discount if they want to place an ad in the monthly newsletter. The minimum purchase is 3 months of advertising.

Basically, I sell it like the industry magazines sell advertising. I've had many vendors want me to use their affiliate links and I just ask them if the industry magazines are willing to place their ads and only get paid if they get sales. I don't see why selling ads on an authoritative website should be any different.

As far as pricing - you just have to wing it. A lot depends on the perceived value of placing ads on your site. You'll know you're asking too much if nobody buys advertising. :-) And don't expect people to come to you - I have to call, e-mail and everything else to sell advertising.

Yeah, I'll definitely be fishing for advertisers, not expecting them to fall into my lap so to say..

You have built up your site quite nice btw! Good job...
