Is Niche Blogging still a viable online income generation option?

Hi all,

I'm in the midst of starting an online niche blog in the finance niche.
However, I'd like to hear from you guys, whether you think niche blogging
is still a viable option of generating a small stream of online income.

Here's the story and my plan, let me know what you guys think:

I'm a currently down and out full-time university student, taking up an LLB in Law. I'm married too. Plus, I've got a one day (yes, you read that right)...one freaking day criminal record, though i actually only spent 4 hours in the slammer.

That pretty much tells me that my future in the corporate world is OVER. Seriously, I have no idea why I'm still bothering to get a degree, (in Law at that...) but Dad and Mom seem to think that it's always better to have something to fall back on.

Nonetheless, I'm not about to let that pussy criminal record get me down... so I've decided to pick up day-trading and make a decent fulltime income out of it.

I recently manged to pick out some gurus that are really worth their salt and I'll be learning from them as well as trading with them.

I thought of doing an online niche blog to:

1) HONESTLY blog about my progress, success, and failed trades

2) Create an online personality that most people can relate to so that
I can show them "If I can do it, so can they!"

3) Generate some income through affiliate sales such as broker recommendation, Amazon sales etc.

4) Prove to people that day-trading can provide the kinda lifestyle we
are seeking for.

I've listed a few affiliate products and services that I'll be selling through my blog. Problem is, I'm just not confident of myself and whether I should go ahead with the idea or abandon it altogether.

I'm looking for a blog designer as well...someone who can do something like: WallStreetOasis.com | Your Finance Community. Advice on Finance Interviews and Careers in Finance.

I've got this feeling, that I can really build a online persona which people can relate to and sell products along the way for affiliate income. Problem is, there's just so much to it that I dont really know where to start.

For a start..designing the blog is already posing a problem as I simply do not know where to find good designers.

Let me know what you guys tthink

Ouch...Criminal record is certainly a debbie downer for a career in Law.

as for your question, though, niche blogging is very much alive and well as long as you do it right, but from what you said you're already on the right track. A few quick tips:

    1. Decide where you're getting traffic from...Do keyword research only if you're interested in SEO; if you plan to acquire traffic through PPC or solo ads or something, don't bother.
    2. Plan out the layout of your website structure / navigation ahead of time
    3. Publish content consistently...This is extremely important for developing a loyal readership.
    4. Build a LIST! Seriously!

If you follow those things you'll probably do just fine for yourself. Expect it to take around 3 - 6 months, even if you start it tomorrow, to really see the kind of results that you dream of when you think about getting into niche blogging. It takes work, but the results can be well worth it.

In my opinion yes it is. Your niche blog still should be your primary way to attract leads. I don't think blogging will be outdated anytime soon so you should stick to that online method.

  • Niche blogging is all about becoming an authority in your niche. That means that you gotta really know what you're talking about in order to mass up a bunch of followers (people like to listen to experts, not to an anonymous fellow sharing random comments).

Unless you REALLY know your niche and your topic, it's going to be VERY difficult to make it big with any authority niche.

It can work and it does work. I know a guy who was homeless and is today a multi millionaire and he started out on a free blog after so many followers of his on an investment forum wanted more info from him.

He was totally self taught from what he found for free on the internet.

However, I would add to have an optin on the blog and even a squeeze page so that you can build your list. The list is where the real money is, imho.

Just as an aside, if you're not likely to be working in the law field, then is it a waste of time to get a Law degree? Would you be better off studying something that could benefit you whatever you did, eg business, communication etc??? Just doesn't seem to me to be a good use of your time.

Unless it is a very profitable niche you want to think about more than blog. More like a network.
