Is there any Top Secret information to finding good keywords? I've had a ton of ideas but every time I put a keyword into Market Samaria it comes up with either not enough traffic, too much competition, or the top 10 sites are all red and have the market sewn shut.

I need help!! I've been after this for 2 weeks now plugging in keyword after keyword for 4+ hours each night. Is finding a good keyword for an idea really that hard??

Thanks,
Mike

    Hi Mike -
You can try some other keyword tools that might make it easier for you. Market Samurai is pretty fast, but returns so much data it can make your head spin!

Micro Niche Finder is good, except really slow. Ultimately, it gives you a red, yellow, or green light on if it's a good keyword or not.

I'm wanting to try out Stealth Keyword Competition Analyzer. It's been highly recommended to me - I just haven't gotten around to it. It tells you if it's an amazing keyword or a terrible keyword and everything in between!

Yep, this is common Mike. Your choices are...keep digging until you find the golden nuggets, change markets (not always a choice, but if you are researching market potential then it may be), or pick the one(s) that have more competition and work harder at trying to rank for them by getting more backlinks, creating more content, securing a better domain name, possibly purchasing an existing site with earlier creation date and more history, etc...

Out of these choices, there is tpyically a way to win.

That said, keyword research is more than just knowing what you can rank for, it's also about commercial potential - and there...not all keywords are created equal. I typically setup a content site to test keywords and see which ones pull best and convert best when entering new markets.

Hey. In order to find "good" keywords or those that convert into sales. You need to know your niche and be looking for keywords at the end of the buying cycle. When I say "keywords at the end of the buying cycle," I'm referring to keywords that would indicate that a person would have been pre-exposed to a product. Product-related keywords are an example of this.

Here is a quick example in the weight loss niche. I'm not in this niche. I just know it's popular and see ads on t.v. I did a search for "weight watchers" using the free Google keyword tool. It gets more than 9 million global monthly searches. I saw the keyword "weight watchers diet." It gets more than 40,000 a month. I put said keyword in the Google search bar using "" like this: "weight watchers diet." As I continued to type, "weight watchers diet plan" came up.

I checked to see how many hits "weight watchers diet plan" gets. It gets more than 5,000 hits a month. This is good, but I also noticed that there are nearly 40,000 competing pages. This is a bit high for my taste, especially since the first site listed is webmd. We are getting closer and still on the right track because I see lots of paid ads by major companies off to the right-hand side of the screen.

As I continue to type, I see "weight watchers diet plan download." This keyword doesn't show up within the Google keyword tool, but I notice that some major companies within the weight loss and diet industry are paying for ad space off the to the side of the screen. There are also only 5 competing pages in the search engines. Getting ranked for this keyword will help you to get traffic from broader keywords as well.

This is just a quick example. You just rinse and repeat the process. I hope this helps some.

    Good luck,
    Joey

That makes a lot more since! I'll take that approach and see what I can find.

I'm also going to look into Micro Niche Finder. I was hoping to stay with a Mac product but maybe that's just not possible. Market Samurai is an information overload.

Thank guys for all the information!!!!!!!

      Hi Mike!

Why don't you try using other keyword tools aside from Market Samurai? I use Google Adwords and SEO Quake to search to find competition levels and hot keywords that I can use. It's very effective and what's even great about it is that these tools are free. And yes, in my case, it has helped me bring in some money for my business.

Here are steps in using the two tools:

      Step 1: Research keyword competitiveness.

(This step will help you establish if the keyword is easy or hard to compete against)
In this phase, you will need to work out the PR (pagerank)of a website so you might need to download SEO Quake (an add-on that will show you the PR (pagerank) when you do a google search).
      • Find the average PR of the top 3 searched terms in your niche market. To find the top 3 searched terms, you need to go to Google Adwords Keyword External Tool (it's free).
      • Make a "broad" search of the keyword that people will most likely use to find your site.
      • Google will return the most popular relevant and related keyword searched based on that search term and list them in order of search volume - basically google will show you the top search terms for that product/niche.
      • Get the top 3 searched terms based on the columns global and local monthly searches. Similar keywords should be eliminated due to the reason that keywords need to be unique.
      • Open a firefox browser and turn on SEO plugin. SEO Quake works best with Firefox. This will help you get the PR of the website.
      • Search the top three keywords you found. You'll get the results and underneath each link, you'll see an SEO Quake portion with a lot of numbers. Look for the PR section. PR's are ranked from 10-0, sometimes even n/a. 10 as highest and 0 as the lowest.
      • Get the average of PR's of the top 10 sites. (i.e[1+10+4+5+2+1+7+6+3+2]/10 = 4.1 average PR) This is the average PR for the keyword you searched. I'll explain the significance of this in the next step.
      • Search the next two keywords and do the same procedure.

      Step 2: Find hot keywords

Again, as mentioned above, the right keywords can help increase traffic. That is why we're undergoing all these steps just to get the right keywords for your site. To find hot keywords there are two factors that you need to consider: Average PR and Monthly Searches.

Monthly search of 0-499 with an average PR of 0-1.9 = fair
Monthly search of 500-999 with an average PR of 2.0-2.5 = fair
Monthly search of 500-999 with an average PR of 0-1.9 = good
Monthly search of 1000-4999 with an average PR of 2.6-2.9 = fair
Monthly search of 1000-4999 with an average PR of 2.0-2.5 = good
Monthly search of 1000-4999 with an average PR of 0-1.9 = excellent
Monthly search of >5000 with an average PR of 3.0-3.5 = fair
Monthly search of >5000 with an average PR of 2.6-2.9 = good
Monthly search of >5000 with an average PR of 2.0-2.5 = excellent
Monthly search of >5000 with an average PR of 0-1.9 = JACKPOT

      • To do this step, make sure you have the average PR of the top 3 keywords which was done above.
      • Then go back to the Adwords keyword tool where you can find the number of monthly searches for a particular keyword.
      • Use the data above to get the jackpot keyword.

As much as possible, go for the JACKPOT! These Jackpot keywords will make it easier to rank highly on google and therefore give you the traffic you need to make a sale. With good research you may event get the top spot on google! To put it simply, the lower the average page rank and the higher the monthly search then the better.

I do hope this will help you with your keyword research.

      Best,
      Nick
