The New Rules of Internet Marketing

Warren buffet says that you should spend less than you earn. This is one of a number of problems that I’m faced with at the moment. Today I actually took action on it by going through my accounts of the last three months and I was horrified.

I spent far too much in the supermarket. I have spent far too much on fuel in my car bearing in mind that I don’t need it for work. It’s a non-essential expense that needs to be cut.

But by far my biggest expense is Internet Marketing. It’s hundreds and hundreds of dollars.

Now some of you might say you have got to spend money to make money. This is true but warren buffet has another rule that contradicts this. He says rule number one never lose money and rule number two is never forget rule number one.

I haven’t made a penny. Not a single cent and I don’t believe I’m the only one.

Far too many of us are treating internet marketing like a hobby. Something to past time to justify spending money with the hope that someday it will work, that you can leave your 9-5 and live happily ever after.

We are waiting for some miracle to somehow happen that one day it will just work. It’s the same for the millions who play the lottery week in week out and never win because the odds are stacked against you. Do you think that warren buffet plays the lottery?

So I hit the nail on the head for some and others are thinking where is this guy heading?

Well I will tell you. I have decided to come up with some rules for myself that maybe someone else can find benefit from. It’s more to hold me accountable because those who are around me either don’t understand IM or they can’t see it working because it hasn’t happened yet.

So here are my new rules of internet marketing.

Rule 1: Treat Internet Marketing like a business not a hobby.

-If it’s not making you money cut it from your budget.
-Don’t let your day job pay for training. Make it pay for itself.
-Don’t buy a great domain name if you have three others that you still haven’t done anything with.
-If you have websites that aren’t making you any money then sell them or make other uses out of them like a test site for example.
-A dollar saved is a dollar earned.
Remember Gordon Gekko saying “Nothing upsets me more than losses”

Rule 2: Have a plan and stick to it.

-Pick one project to work on at a time.
-Don’t read a single info product that is not relayed to your goal.
-Write down all your ideas in a book and refer to it when you have completed the project you’re on.
-Aim for quality not quantity. The first stage is about making a little money the second stage is scaling it up to make lots of money.

Rule 3: Stop downloading illegal copies of info products and software.

-Stay away from the freebie forums you don’t need it.
-Everyone loves freebies but you don’t use something properly unless you have paid out for it with your own hard earned cash.
-If you can’t afford it then save up for it or pay someone who has a copy. Plenty on fiverr or odesk.
-If it doesn’t make any money then sell it.
-It’s not going to make you a profit then you don’t need it.

Rule 4: Keep accounts

-Track your progress
-Let’s you know how well your doing
-Keep it in a safe place away from the tax man
-Keeps you accountable to your self
-Allows you to keep track of your spending

    Say what??
-Keep it in a safe place away from the tax man
    Say what??

Maybe I'm misunderstanding this (a fairly common occurrence), but if you're saying what I think you're saying, you're encouraging folks to take some pretty serious legal risks.

WRT "pay someone who has a copy," I believe he means "if you cannot afford a tool, hire someone who owns the tool to do the work that requires this tool."

I don't think he's suggesting you buy pirate software off fiverr and odesk.

No matter how much you're making I would not risk getting in trouble with the man. Get yourself a good tax consultant instead, there are loads of things you can do that are completely legal!

There is a good little quote that I heard sometime ago,
    it seems to be quite relevant to this conversation;

You don't get rich by writing checks!
    (within context of course)

I also think CRO (Conversion Rate Optimization) is coming into play as well.

I'm going to go against this one.

I'm always going to treat it more like a hobby than a business.

I'm out to have fun. If I'm not having fun, I'd rather have a job.

By fun, I don't mean putting in less effort. Just doing the things I want to do to be successful. I could never do most of the things other people do, on this forum.

I'd rather just have a blog that people follow.

The only tools I now need are my domain name, hosting and auto-responder + maybe the odd thing.

If I can't make a living doing that, I'll keep working.

At some points you are right, but this one...

sounds totally wrong. If you are spending money for ****ty stuff, then it may be right, but if you know what you do, a dollar saved just means limiting yourself.

These are all basic points but it is amazing how many people do the complete opposite...

For some reason so many people don't think they can make real money from IM unless they stumble upon some miracle, but really you can live off IM easily working your own hours just by copying what others are doing

Great ... nice post until we get to you advising others on how to pirate other people's products.

Buying a product on Fiverr or Odesk that is not theirs to sell is piracy.
Selling someone's product without permission is piracy.

Again, I think he's saying HIRE SOMEONE WHO HAS IT. I mean, he just said not to download the products, and I'm pretty sure he means "don't pirate things."

On the whole I would say these are some good rules to adopt. I think I can sort of see the situation that you've gotten yourself into because I've been in a place where I've made similar rules for myself.

You can still enjoy your business like you do a hobby, but you have to do it with drive and a measure of progress. And when you're low on cash, you can't afford to be spending a ton of money, so totally agree with you there. Sounds like you all around need to start taking yourself more seriously.

You just need to realize that you have exactly as much control over your life and your business as you want to have. You get out of it exactly what you put into it.

If you put in time, genuine effort and a passion to succeed no matter what, then eventually you will push and challenge yourself until you get there. Unless you give up. Which, granted, is sometimes the smarter decision to make, if not the most courageous. That's not directed to the OP, though, of course!

Congratulations on turning a new leaf - I would suggest that you come back and read your OP every day before you start working until it is ingrained solidly in your mind.

    Good luck!
