Every body in the world can tell you your idea is great or it sucks but its only you that decides if your idea becomes a reality. Don't look for confirmation just do it. If you feel in your heart that this is the idea that you will fight for regardless of the obstacles that you will face then pursue it until you succeed. Good luck but you do not need it if you believe in yourself and your idea. Luck really means - Leveraging Under Correct Knowledge...

Do you even have a business plan?

      Out of curiosity how much research have you done regarding successfully starting and operating a article directory? It isn't as simple as it might seem, tasks include;

      • Reviewing content before publishing(A MAJOR TIME SUCK, number one reason people give up)
      • Dealing with technical support(MAJOR TIME SUCK)
      • Dealing with general customer support(MAJOR TIME SUCK)
      • The list goes on...

It is not a one man/woman operation.

A little while ago people went crazy starting article directories under mass delusions of grandeur. 99% failed, and 99% of the directories you can find today will be gone or dead within the next 12 months. (Assuming they aren't already)

EZA has been around 10 years because Chris Knight is a smart business man and treats EZA as a business.

        This.

Talk to some Warriors who have set up article directories over the last couple of years (there are many). There may be one or two exceptions, but I don't think most of them are still actively involved in the business. Not the ones who usually post in threads discussing "the business model of article directories", anyway.

EZA will survive, because they have a huge head-start, everyone has heard of them, and they have a very smart, experienced guy running the show. Others ... maybe not so much.

        In my opinion.

It would be useful for you because you would have the ability to have other people producing content to help your website get massive traffic. The Google Panda update made article directories a lot less powerful. The way that Ezine makes money is from running advertisements. Its useful for writers because they will have a source to have publishers come by and possibly syndicate content. It will only be useful for both sources if you build your site up to high authority and a well known brand behind it. Until that point you will be paying your dues. If your not willing to go through hell and back to make it work then don't even begin. The number one reason people fail is lack of definite purpose. If this is not it then don't waste your time. You have to create something that you are willing to spend the rest of your life possible fighting for. It will not take that long but that needs to be your mentality.

Actually, it can be a good idea. Already there are thousands of article directories in English. But if you are planning to start one in another language, it could be great. You will have a headstart over others just like EZA had over other English article directories.

Try to maintain quality by being strict with regards to what kind of content you accept. If its poorly written or looks like scraped or spun content, then you should not approve it.

By the way, another thing you can do is have a topic based article directory - like only travel related articles, or health related articles or articles about a particular city or country only. Again you have to maintain quality here.

Make it very open for new users in the beginning. When you got a steady, well writing user base make it more limited so you provide better content.

Could work as there is far less competition in French.

There are some article sites that are sitting there without much stress.

I think you need a different slant though. Don't make it too "general" for example. Maybe you could start by have articles only in 2 or 3 categories such as business, law, real estate.

French, Spanish, Portuguese, Mandarin ... the list goes on and on. It's a big ol' world out there and not everyone in it speaks English. English is the predominant IM language mainly due to the influence of the US, UK, and Australia - all English speaking countries. People are people, though, and if something works in the English speaking world, it will likely work elsewhere, too. If you're bilingual, you've got a head start on everybody else. Go for it!

English is the predominant language in IM because of US, UK and Canada influence. But internet usage and online buying is spreading at a rapid pace throughout all parts of the world, specially in Asian countries. So, its wise to get ahead of others and start targeting other languages to dominate the markets before everyone else. You are likely to reap huge benefits in the coming years if you show foresight in this regard.
