Using celeb names in domain

I'd just like to ask if I'm allowed to use celebs names in my domain name. For example BillGatesSite.com
#celeb #domain #names

My advice: don't do it. That way you'll never have anything to worry about.

Unless its a fan site I wouldn't touch it.

Haha not a chance. Even in cases where your name is Bill Gates they will have the domain off you quicker than a horny dog.

  • Hi, in the past I tried with celebs and famous names domains, and especially with big company domains I got my domains deleted in just 1 day.
With celebs instead nothing happened, but I'm talking about fanpages or in any case community of users liking the subject.

In general I advise to avoid completely company names and product names, but if you want to try building a community of fans, try it. In case they ask you to delete it.
I did many memorial site, for example for Michael Jackson, Amy Winehouse and a few days ago for Whitney Houston.

    Thanks and see you soon,
    Alessandro

Especially very well known celebrities with very much money like Bill Gates should be avoided.

I understand that many celebrities belong to agencies who employ people specifically to scour the internet looking for unauthorised attempted commercial exploitations of their clients' civil law rights, images and so on. "Fan sites" and "review sites" are one thing, but if it's monetized/commercial, I'd be very worried about claims/challenges from bulldog lawyers, myself.

I guess it would suck if your real name is Bill Gates, whatever.

How can they bump you off if you use your own name and it just so happens to be a celeb's name? So does it mean that a celeb owns all rights to your name?

Many budding actors/artists will trademark their name

            Yes - this is so.

And in many jurisdictions, people have civil-law rights protecting them against commercial exploitations of their name/public image even without having done that.

So, I guess the best thing to do is trademark your name before any budding actors do. That way as soon as they become full-fledged famous you can bring about your own law suits. You would, in fact make a famous person have to change their name, I guess... I dunno.

A few years ago, when I started my fire alarm business, a squatter grabbed the dot com to my domain name because he knew I had just registered it with my city as a DBA. I had to go for the dot net name.

There wasn't a damn thing I could have done about it. I verified it with my attorney. I'd like to hear internet attorney's take on this thread... it would be interesting, no doubt.

Most celebs have pseudonyms and will actively choose one that's not been TM'd

Satire/humor is a different form of usage, and one courts normally permit, I believe. That isn't a monetized site, exploiting his persona for commercial purposes, I think? That's very different ...

It's not worth trying. Celebrities could even go after fan sites with their name in the domain if the fan site was monetized, as it could be seen as bad faith abuse of their trademark (and yes, a popular celebrity's name is their trademark, whether actually registered or common-law).
