moving from bluehost to another host with bluehost's cpanel backup. Difficult?

Hello,

I have about 5 sites on a bluehost sharing account. I want to switch to another hosting company, and I'm reading that typically, if you do a full cpanel backup, and the other company has cpanel, moving to the new host is a painless solution.

However, I'm also told by some hosts that bluehost doesn't provide a full cpanel backup as they have a customized cpanel.

Have any of you ever moved from bluehost to another host using their full cpanel backup without problems?

thanks!

I did move from BH to another hosting company. The new hosting company offers to move sites free of charge for new customers. However, they would all have been moved as "add ons" - the way they were set up in BH. Since I wanted them to have their own cpanel etc. I paid someone a few dollars per site to move them.

If you are moving all of yours to the same type of arrangement at another hosting company, you may want to see if they will do it for free for using their service.

Ask the new host to shift websites for you.

And this is the problem...most hosts say they will do the move free; however, when I mention I have bluehost, they tell me that bluehosts' cpanel backup is a not a full cpanel backup, but a customized one, and thus, they won't be able to transfer the site as they only do, full cpanel transfers. And bluehost will tell you that they do have a full cpanel backup, so I'm just confused!

And that's why my question is...have others who have had bluehost moved to another host using the bluehost cpanel backup?

Here's a support article from HostGator's site that says they can do it. Scroll down to BlueHost on the chart: Transferability from Common Hosts « HostGator.com Support Portal
Chat with HostGator support just in case something has changed since this article was posted.

I'm sure that if you give HostGator tech support your old BlueHost account login details they can figure it out. Their techs deal with transfers all the time.

I'm with Micksss on this one.
HostGator are definitely the masters when it comes to migrating your data from your old host to the new one.

There's a number of good articles from the google search results using the keyword "migrate bluehost to hostgator".
(I don't want to post direct links and get in trouble

But from what I'm reading, the bluehost cpanel interface is slightly restricted, but it's still based on the actual cpanel system which (in the background at least) should be fully functional.

I would certainly contact HostGator tech support and ask them the question as I'm sure they've migrated more than a few people from bluehost over.

    Hope this helps!
    Paul.

We have done it often, it doesn't depend on cpanel at all, the only difficulties arise when some hosts have critical php functions disabled, but with ssh access that can usually be resolved.
