Video Game Marketing Consulting

I want to try my hand at offering a marketing consulting service, specializing in video games. I've got a small blog where I write about an article a week on marketing and the occasional interesting bit of news. I'm working on networking mostly on twitter as that is where most of my potential clients are.

The problem I am facing is that a lot of my potential clients are indie game developers. Indie devs dont really have much cash up front to spend on marketing.

I'm wondering what some may suggest on how to go about charging small studios who dont have big budgets until they've already sold a lot of their product. Also how would you convince them that it is worth their while to hire someone offering marketing services?

Thanks for any and all helpful responses.

I don't have a ton of experience in this area but I would think right now you could get A LOT of clients who make apps for the iPhone and Android market place. It seems like you might have better luck with them opposed to big game companies who already have budgets and departments for this kind of thing.

What I would do to show them how valuable you can be is contact them and explain everything, if they don't get the message tell them you will show them what you can do by sending affiliate traffic their way. iTunes has an affiliate program, not sure about Android. Then generate a bunch of leads for them to show off your chops. Then you can talk monthly fee for offering a similar service. This way you're not really doing all of this for free because you're still earning a small affiliate commission but also able to prove your services.
