Autoresponder: Frequency of follow up?

Hey guys,

I hope you are all doing well.

I am setting up my first auto responder through Aweber. I love it! Its so easy to use.

The one thing I can't seem to figure out is how often I should be emailing my list? Once every 3 days ? 5 days?

I looked through all of the newsletter I've signed up for and they vary a lot.

The ultimate answer will be to test, but it would be nice to have a rough idea from what other people are using.

Thanks in advance. Your thoughts are appreciated.

~Sean

There seems to be no one-fit-all answer, like you said testing will tell you. Some people say every few days, others say every day. Plus depends on what your mailing.

    Sorry, not much help.

I do twice a week. But a lot of the gurus mail 3-4 times a week even though their mails are essentially nothing but an affiliate link with very little useful content. I'd try to give them at least a little useful content to keep them with you.

I send a helpful content filled article once a day, then about once a month I send a product review with an affiliate link.

In my regular content filled valuable emails, I only put a link to my blog.

To me, some of the guru's send out daily, and almost all promotional. Seems they'd burn through their lists, but people forget many have a big backend that is always building their lists, so they can afford it. Course many people live and die by some guru's, so they take the constant promotion and ask for more.

As far as I'm concerned, Paul Myers of Online Business Building Newsletter - TalkBiz News has one of the best newsletters on the market and apparently lots of other people feel the same way as it's one of the oldest newsletters in existence. He only send them when he has something important to say, no specific time frame.

I have belonged to other ezines/newsletters that send crap about everything they want to promote without really anything new to say...guess what? I don't subscribe to them any more.

Do your subscribers a favor and send when you actually have something to say not just a promotion or crap. That doesn't mean 3 days, 5 days or even a week. Say something important and useful.

Agree that you need to find your own frequency! Some people are very effective with one every few days or one every day, this annoys me a little though. I usually keep it to one every few days to remind people you are still willing to help them with their needs and you have something to offer them that would be beneficial to them. Just my 2 cents!

I've found that a "congrats, you did it!" type message sent immediately, followed by the first (and the strongest) message in your email series the next day, works well. Then space them out every 3 days.

Got a whole module that deals with questions like these in my sig.

As long as they remember who you are, but enough time between emails so that you are actually providing them with some value

I'm just getting the grips with an autoresponder system and I think one email a day might be a little excessive. I'm going to try keep to a once every three or four days to not bother my subscribers but still let them know I'm there to assist them in some way. Good suggestions!

I usually go with more frequent emails right after someone subscribes (once a day, or every other day), then taper it off to once ever 4 or 5 days after a week or so.

I have been looking for this exact answer since Im a noob. I had set up an AR for a welcome, 2 day, and 4 day. I now have close to 150 subscribers. I think I will wait a couple days and let them run their course then send them all a message at once.

I am talking as a subscriber of many e-mail lists ) One or Two follow-up e-mails per week are enough. More than that is annoying to me...

Would agree that 4 or 5 per week might be a little excessive! If you have quality information to offer your customers that they can benefit from, AND offer them something for free in the deal, you can get a lot of click throughs and interest!

Awesome info in this thread. Thanks! Differing opinions but some great points have been made.

Yes it comes down to your market but I think that the 3-4 day rule makes sense. This means two per week on average.

Only sending when you have something important to share is a great idea but when you are setting up an auto responder you do need to plan out the intervals between days.

Great posts so far, I would think that somewhere between 2 to 3 per week is enough for my business needs, as you don't want to hassle your customers continuously or try and "force" things onto them. Dps makes a good point though, maybe we should emphasize the quality of the information over the quantity, a well written and easy to read email is better than 5 poorly written ones!
